Adwords only showing for content???

Hey Warriors,

My ad is only showing for content and doesn't show for google search although it says 'on'. Using the adwords diagnostic tool it says

"An ad is showing for this keyword, but it does not appear on the first page of search results.", despite raising the keyword bid.

I'm receiving impressions for content but nothing for search.

Anyone had this problem before? Should I up the bid again (its saying 'Great' for quality score) but recommends I improve the CTR- only problem is the ad doesnt show so I can't improve the CTR.

Any advice is welcomed!

Cheers,

Adam

    Hey Adam,

Sounds like your bid is too low. You may be on the search network, but on page 30 or somewhere buried, where you won't see it.

I'd recommend copying your current ad, running the first ad only on the "content" network, and then use the second ad only on "search".

Then you'll get a clear idea on which ad shows where, for what price.

When I set up my ads, I often create one for "Blue Widgets-Content" and then another "Blue Widgets-Search" to keep my campaigns straight.

If upping your price brings your ad to page one, you may need to bid a bit more for the first few days. If your conversion is good, Google will begin rewarding your relevance by dropping your bid price. So, in effect, you may be able to gain page one for $2.00 per click right off, and as your ad proves itself, that could drop to $0.90 or something like that (I made those numbers up).

My experience is to land between positions 3-5 or 3-7 is better quality that position 1-2. Too many click happy folks hit the first and second ads.
    Test it out.

The only risky part of doing this is you have to watch your budget and make sure your click prices come down and/or you don't get a ton of clicks for tire-kickers.

I put a few tips together about qualifying your audience with the language you use in your ads (its in the free report on this signature, if you are interested).

    Hope this helps you!

      Thanks John,

I went to do as you said (splitting content and search into 2 ad groups) and found that now my ad is displaying in search, and ranks #4?

I guess Google needed a little longer to realise I'd upped the keyword bid.

How do you go about changing an ad group to only display for content or just for search? I tried finding somewhere to turn it off but couldn't find out how (I haven'y used adwords in a while, and they've made a few changes since I last used it!)

      Cheers,

      Adam

Amen to that! I generally shoot for positions 4-7 though. I don't like #3 because sometimes google will show up to three ads directly above the organic results and you still get a lot of click happy tire kickers in those spots. Not to mention it costs slightly less.
