Hello there,

My first post here, so please go easy on me.

We keep reading here and there that SEO is changing. That every year SEO evolves and the things you did before doesn't matter now. So I'm wondering if is that all true? Is SEO as whole evolving or is just parts of it (like the rank signals)? With those thoughts, I would like to know from you which are the main areas/concepts of SEO that represent the true foundation of SEO, from a one-page to enterprise one?

Thank you,

Hi Oldcastle and welcome to the forum.

It is right, SEO is evolving all the time. It is only natural that it should be that way as markets change, peoples needs and wants change and trends can impact perceptions.

SEO was never gonna be out of all that. In the past, for example, all you had to do was have more backlinks than your competitor. SO as you can imagine, software that spammed links everywhere was king.

Then quantity was (in theory) swapped for quality. The rise of PageRank. Later on came the advent of social signals (your presence in the so called web 2.0) which in theory helped you rank higher (except it wasn't and still isn't exactly like that that it happens, way to easy to manipulate) and now Google, the big Kahuna of search is focusing on what they consider to be th eperfect user experience.

They have said for a lng time that they take over 200 hundred different factors when ranking a website.Over time they fluctuate in importance and they now want to emphasize a few metrics that, when put together, make for a new one we will now call "user experience" (UE for the rest of this conversation).

UE simply compiles a few well known metrics like bounce rate, time on site, time on page, internal linking and navigation and a few more. Put together, it gives big G an idea of whether the person doing a search found a quality website or a crap one and it affects your ranking.

Does this mean links no longer matter? No way, links are the very reason the web exists, otherwise it wouldn't be a "web", it would be something else. They will always be important but ar eno longer the only thing you have to keep in mind when trying to rank for any given term.

So to answer your question, the main aspects of SEO are the same they have always been: On page SEO and Off page SEO, but caring for both is now harder than it used to be due to the natural evolution of the field.

Start by making sure your website is ready to be shown to the world. Go to Google Webmaster tools and check for ways to improve there.Responsive is and has been the buzzword for some time now, meaning how your website is seen on an Ipad or a cell phone (or any othe rmobile device for that matter).

Improve your load speed, your internal linking and polish your code until the tool gives you flying colors.

After that you are ready for the off page SEO, the promotion, SMO, SEM, PR and a ton more acronyms which are nothing more than you promoting the hell out of your website all over the web.

That should get you started on this thrilling road.

    Hope this helps.

@santi i agree with you. that is how the metrics goes, gone are the days we only prefer building backlinks without considering how search engine boots see our website.

    from recent studies its has been;
    1. website auditing >>>if your search bad search engine accessibility, then all backlink effort will just be mess. search engines needs error free, user friendly, speedy websites.

    2. then comes page to page optimization commonly called on-page seo.
    3. And then aat this point, we can start thinking of off page seo.

Well, essentially Google still concentrates heavily on 1 thing: Links from many relevant and authority sites to your website. This has never changed.

When people say SEO is evolving, they're basically saying that all the spammy methods and manipulative methods they used to do (e.g. duplicate content, links from irrelevant sites e.t.c.) are not effective anymore.

To sum up on everything, i would recommend you to go back in the history of SEO.
I am a newbie in SEO world, I started like hardly 3 months ago.
    So my story begins like
I always wanted to build a website and sell products. I started to check out some WordPress theme. From there I got to know that the themes are premade. For me, it was like just buy a theme and then everything will be ready just like they shown on the demo site. I started to research about how to install the theme from there I learned that themes have to be setup manually. Then I got to know that themes have plugins to enhance our experience. From there My journey started > Got to know about affiliates > there are ways to rank website> then I got to know about SEO as we all in the school study about history but not the world is changed, but they always talk about history so I started to learn SEO from 2008-2009. Getting some online classes about what people were doing in the past. how people are selling affiliates, how to people are advertising. Even now I am learning and trying to improve myself with SEO and I am still far behind.

Hope you got something which no one recommends us. We have start with history, basics, advanced and professional level.

Please share what you have learned so far.
