Exactly how important IS page rank?

I am struggling in the page rank department. My main focus has been on getting quality backlinks. Admittedly I haven't put as much effort into quantity as I should, but I'm trying not to sweat it since I do have enough clients to keep me busy. But I would like to improve... of course.

I run a search for my primary keyword phrase and the number 2 listing on Google has a PR 3.

He has about twice as many pages as I do. His content is quite good. It's a nice site.

By looking at his site, it doesn't seem like he's a huge powerhouse in the business. He's not a Google or a Facebook. It looks like a small company. Maybe I'm wrong.

Is it the PR 3 that pushed him to the number 2 spot? Or is the content of his site more important? I'm debating whether I should focus efforts on content and not worry so much about the backlinks at the moment. I'm sure it's a combination of both... but which is more important?

So how does a small time player get such awesome rankings?

Focus on content and backlinks and you will increase your PR as well as improve your rankings in the SERPs.

Page rank isn't really that important unless you run some sort of directory or want to sell links. Unless this is the case you should concentrate on building content and traffic.

Pagerank is google's way of determining how valuable and important the site is and for some, it becomes the basis of getting backlinks or exchanging links. What optimization works have you done so far aside from getting quality backlinks? Have you tried doing on Page optimization like placing or inserting keywords/phrases in the Title, Headers, etc? And try using your keywords/phrases as an anchor text in getting backlinks.

Regarding PageRank, all you need to know is that the higher the PageRank of a backlinks is, the more powerful it is, including on site inlinks.

Other than that, the PR of the page itself is not what is making this person rank higher. The backlinks are.
