Building Links Too Fast- How Fast is Too Fast?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any real life examples of how fast is too fast in building links to a site or page.

I have seen all the information that suggests that you should build links slowly and methodically without being too consistent because we don't want to tip google off to what we are doing with our efforts.

My question is this, what about the instances when something major happens in the world and within seconds there are 1,000's of links pointing to a news site or article and all of the sudden this news story from that site becomes #1 in google. ie, MJ's death

Just trying to see if anyone on the forum has tested this with real world results...

Thanks for you response is advance. I do appreciate you taking the time to offer your opinion.

Ray S.

I have never encountered a penalty for bulding links too fast, I think the main area you would need to be concerned with this is for a new domain. unless you have a massive team building thousands and thousands of links a day I dont think you need to be concerned. however it is always better to build links on a constant day by day basis than by a one off hit.

I am not sure how fast would be too fast but I can tell you that I've a website for which I bought sitewide links from a 8 sites that had 70,000+ pages indexed in google altogether, so, that means I actually built 70,000 backlinks all in 2 days or so. Couple of days later when I checked through google's webmaster tool it had arround 1900 links crawled by then and now after 6 months Google's webmaster tools shows around 13000 links and it's 45000+ according to yahoo site explorer tools. The site never got penalized or anything and it's doing great in SERPs. I hope this helps you determine how you can go about link building.

I must admit that this issue has bugged me for quite sometime now and thank God it's been tackled here. I still find the information conflicting though but thought Scarfeet you gave the best analogy as you included figures and examples.

Also, Davion thanks for yours too. I don't see reason why SEs will penalize links that are constantly being retweeted by everyone within a single day. I hope to read more from others...

      Thanks again

You get in rouble for build low quality links too fast. If you are getting links from trusted authority pages that hold page rank then you can get as many of these as you like. If you are getting thousands of links from low ranking forums that also have out going links to spamy and cloaked sites then this could trigger some alarm bells.

    Hi,

It really depends on where you are building those links. Nowadays, with social media marketing like Twitter, Digg etc, it is possible for a website to gain thousands of links overnight. Should Google be penalizing them? Of course NOT! Since these websites are gaining such links due to their popularity.

Compare that to gaining links that looks like a spamming link tool in action which is definitely a no no.

So the issue is where the links are coming from.

When building links, build gradually, at 10 to 20 links per day. And make sure that they are from reputable sites.

In a recent interview, Chris Rempel said 3 to 4 links per week at most.

My point is that there are no hard and fast rules here.

You'll get an array of all sorts of different answers to your question.

It depends so much on so many different factors.

Your question can not be answered specifically
until it can be asked more specifically.

And that's as specific of an answer
as I'm going to give today.

You should be fine as long as you do not use the type of automated packages that offer to build thousands of links in a matter of hours that in the long term will damage your rankings.

My experience tells me you guys are right! I normally build hundreds of links to a site without any problem, even with new sites. May be some links will be ignore at the moment, but they all will be counted after your site gain "trust rank"...

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I appreciate it very much.

If I might add a follow up to this post, what would you consider a "new site"... Less than 6 months old, 3 months...

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Of course when real world news happens there will be natural linking. But If everyday guys strat getting 100 links/day something is definitely fishy and Google will figure that out quickly.

I think if you focus on a few websites and do things by hand, you should be reasonably safe, just be a bit more slow on newer domains.
