Website bouncing up and down google rankings

My site for the past week has gone from 6th position to 3rd to 8th, to 3rd to 6th again and i'm not sure why? is it more likely to settle in the higher position or lower?

    Have you been updating it and building backlinks? This can create movement(sometimes down at first, then back up) or it could just be that the sites around you are moving around.

    That's why it's called Google Dance :-)

    You are better off. I have one site used to be on the first page and out of sudden, it's gone from the radar. Nowhere to bee seen in the first 500 pages. Am I worried? No. Maybe as someone has said, it's probably in the consolidating phase.
