Can keyword "(not provided)" search traffic be spam?

I've been using Google Analytics focussing on traffic in the Search channel to avoid referral spam that I've been experiencing.

But is it safe to assume that all traffic in this channel is spam free? I can't see how a referral spammer would gain from keyword "(not provided)" spam, but I thought I'd check anyway.

Is there any reason to doubt the authenticity of this traffic?

  • More than likely, that is google hiding that keyword on your report. If you install Google webmasters tools on that domain, you will gain more insight into your organic traffic than analytics.

    Hope this helps
