Ive read a lot about wordpress being Google freindly more than sites built with Dreamweaver, Xsitepro etc.....is there any truth with this statement? Im working my way through wordpress and for the life of me cannot get anything to look half decent.....I know its me as I have seen some amazing stuff designed with wordpress. What do you guys recommend I do...I know the basics of html(very basic) just inserting an image and aligning it is difficult.I have been spoilt using WYSIWYG editors.
Any help or advice would be great.

    Hi rick

sorry to hear you have been having problems here is a free wordpress tutorial:

Samantha Milner's Expert Series - Become a Wordpress Expert in 24Hrs

it covers everything inc plugins, pings, setup and most importantly getting indexed on google in under a day. I would also suggest having a good luck around the internet for some nice themes you will surprised to hear many of us hate our themes and spend a long time before we are satisfied with one. I think i was on my 5th before i felt happy with it.

the best tip for alligning them is to put your banner/picture onto a site such as frontpage, nvu etc and then copy and paste the html into the centred position if that is what you require.

for templates i would search on google there are millions of them and i am sure if you had a good luck you will find one you like and just because you dont like it doesnt mean your customers wouldnt.

    kind regards

    sam

When I was getting to know Wordpress, I'd take a free theme and then try and figure out what makes it work. A lot of themes are based off images, so go through the image folder and download the lot - open them in PhotoShop and see where they fit in. (If I can't see where they fit in initially I turn the image bright pink, reupload it and then check the website).

If you can figure out how a theme ticks, you can start to edit it and play around with it. Learning off a free theme, you'll know what it's supposed to look like and you can play around until you get the effect you want. Do the same with the stylesheet, fiddle with it, turn stuff pink so you can see what is controlling what.

I can't make my own themes due to HTML blindness, but I can now edit and configure a theme using the images... worth a shot, maybe?

Download a finished theme and then tweak it.
I used to do that and still does sometimes.
