The main thing to realize is that google doesn't always tell the whole truth. I've had a client get customers from a long tail kw that showed zero search volume.

Yes, I mean Google Keyword Planner. This is want my problem look like. I am trying to see the volume of the long tail keyword that I want to rank but it doesn't show any data about the long tail keyword.

The question is not clear here. Are you talking about finding the right keywords?

Was google keyword tool better than google keyword planner? Google keyword tool had the function to switch "match type" from "broad" to "exact". Google keyword planner doesn't have that option. Does that mean that it just goes with exact keywords now?

You know the Google keyword tool is supposed to be used with Adwords right?
It's not going to show you organic results, it's just going to show you what other
users are using with their Adwords campaigns. It's possible that users are not
interested in other keywords, and therefore your options will be limited.

If you want some organic keywords, use the "Searches related to" option instead.
Again it's not gonna give you the organic search volumes, but at least you can start
    to build your keyword list.

    Thanks @Glenn Leader and @Guptachetan121993
Yes I was referring to keyword research tool. Apologies for the noob questions. I was trying to learn some IM on youtube and saw one of Vickz HTA videos where he teaches how to use google keyword tool. Things seem different now with keyword planner. I'll just mess with the ad group ideas, keyword ideas, and keyword options. Then just test and track which keywords are working.
