How to handle google maps and directories without address?

Can someone offer some advice on what to do about google maps and business directories for those without a physical address?

I work from home and don't want my home address published online. Google maps doesn't allow using a P.O. box or something like a UPS store box. I know you can sign up with google maps and then select the option to use a service area instead of showing your address, but how would that effect seo when it comes to other online business directories? For example, if I don't have an address on google maps or the address is different than my address on other online business directories, wouldn't that be harmful for seo?

Sounds like people don't come to your location to do business with you. That means that, even if you had a physical location you didn't mind making public, you should still choose the service area. If you chose the address, Google will not show you in the pack anyway.

That's correct, people don't come to my location, my work is done online. So, let's say I pick the service area and then purchase a P.O. box to use on other business directories. Would be ok for local seo? There wouldn't be any penalties or anything?
