You can check on-page SEO by using SEO analysis tools.
    Some important tools are;-

Metadata tool: Displays text in title tags and meta elements.

Keyword density tool: Reveals on-page SEO keyword statistics for linked and unlinked content

Keyword optimization tool: Analyzes on page optimization by showing the number of words used in the content, including anchor text of internal and external links.

Link Accounting tool: Displays the number and types of links used.

Header check tool: Shows HTTP Status Response codes for links.

Source code tool: Provides quick access to on-page HTML source code.
    Thanks

Use one of the seo-softwares that has 'site auditor' module. Usually, there is a trial version for two weeks or more. Good auditor will show you the information about all technical errors (H tags, canonical, meta, load speed, response code and so on). Except us I can recommend rankwatch.

If the phrases you are hoping to rank for don’t appear on the page, it means you have failed the major part of on page seo.

You seem to know the basic stuff to look for. I'm not sure what you're asking here.

I'm just using Chrome's Show HTML Source (or whatever it's in English). It's got nice colors for the code and everything.

If you're trying to lear potential problems the quickest way possible I'd really suggest running a service such as Moz or Woorank, or a tool such as Link Assistant's Auditor on a few sites, and picking up the stuff they highlight. Then try to learn witch of those are actually important, and not just filler on the screen. However, it's easier to move forward when you've got an idea what you're looking for.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

At first you can do a Free audit by any SEO audit tool which will give you some basic and intermediate data, but those data is important.
    Tool you can use:

Your first step to doing on page SEO is doing research on your competitors. Find out what keywords they use.

Put those keywords into Google Keyword planner to see level of competition and search volume. This will give you an idea of what keywords to use.

Then you have to implement those keyword on your site starting with the meta title.

    <title>Primary Keyword - Secondary Keyword | Company Name</title>

Then ad mete description which contains keyword:

    <meta name="description" content="Some text containing keyword"</meata>

Next step is to ad H1 and H1 headings on your page that contain keywords

    <h1>Some Keyword</h1>
    <p>A paragraph</p>
    <h2>H2 heading</h2>

In the content of your page you need to use different varies and similar words to the main keyword you are trying to optimize for.

On page optimization is must for a website in order to perform SEO on it. Unless and until On page optimization is done on a website, it will be difficult to rank it in any search engines. So, if you have a newly developed website then you must check it on few tools like SEOPTIMER, SMALLSEOTOOLS etc.

You will get to know about the complete details of your website easily and you can optimize it easily as per the Gogogle algorithms.

Even biased people are right some of the time!

It's concise and accurate and, worse, it's got good examples.

Conclusion: most will ignore it. You'll see them here tomorrow, asking if using h1 tags for titles helps SEO or if they should use keywords in the alt text.
