"Imaginary" is a bit strong word, but Google Sandbox is indeed a hypothesis that some people believe in. It's supposedly a part of algorithm that stalls the ranking of new sites to combat spam. I find that it's common and normal that new sites are so weak that they've got no change of ranking in any case, and I see no strong reason to believe in this explanation.

I've seen claims that Google has confirmed the existence of sandbox, but I don't remember seeing such confirmation. Of course there's some vague comments such as this ancient one from Cutts. I don't personally give that much weight to this kind of non-statement: "in some industries there's a form of spam prevention that might kinda feel like it". And as you can see it's been a decade since that comment.

I have no idea what charlesdavis is saying.

Hmmm, I had my numerous encounters so there's my two cents on the subject.

Technically such a thing doesn't exist by the name you gave. Google Sandbox is a name given to a process, which many websites go through when they are launched or going through indexing changes.

OK, now that that is out of the way. Google Sandbox is practically a period of time your sites goes through to rank permanently in the SERP.

Few examples, we launched a site with more than 300 pages and it didn't rank for whole 3 months at all. No excessive link building was done, only bookmarks, you know the type of sites where people don't actually click on your website.

Another example, a one page website, its entire content was re-written. It took him around 1 month to stop at some positions for more than a day.

Both of these examples are part of my experience and each website experienced a change of rankings on a daily basis, which was something I've never seen before, have it documented somewhere, but can't share it - company policies.

In layman terms this Sandbox is a process, which every website goes through, but the time it spends there is indefinite.

    Hi,
The Google Sandbox Effect is a theory used to explain why newly-registered domains or domains with frequent ownership changes rank poorly in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS).
Google Notify these websites as not following the search engine policies and collection of these websites put in space reserve by google among DB.

I agree with nettiapina , google sandbox is just a good effort by google to avoid spam.No search engine would like to play with its reputation. We can say it an indefinite period for keeping new sites to wait and filter spam out of them.
I am new to this site but it looks good that members share healthy information.
    Thanks everybody.

You were simply building links that were very weak. There's no need invoke sandbox as an explanation.

That's not what I said. I don't believe that "Google Sandbox" exists.

I made a video about this if anyone is interested. Just PM me. Passing sandbox depends a lot of the keyword volume x cpc for how quickly you come out, other niches vary as well.

The sandbox is a myth. It is made up by wannabe and pretend SEO's (usually from India) as an excuse for not being able to rank their crap.

There is a difference between sandbox and deletion from google's search results. The sandbox is a filter used by google to prevent new websites from taking top spots on search results, while a google ban is a complete exclusion of the website from the search results.
