If I launch a new site and it gets a lot of direct and referral traffic to begin with, do I need to worry about SEO?

Have you read the question or else just posted randomly by reading the title. You're answer doesn't relates anything OP asked.

      OP:
No need to worry about that. But do check from which sources you are getting traffic - if it is referral check whether are they spam sources like 4webmasters.org or traffic2money, if yes, thats not correct traffic, check the original traffic by filtering these type of websites.

For more referral sources, you can just google it "referral spam google analytics" there are tons of resources out there.

Having lots of direct and referral traffic is good, but the question is that how targeted they are or how many of them are converting? If the conversion rate is good enough then dont need to worry much, but still SEO traffic is important. Because if you can rank on first page with a few highly targeted long tail keywords, you can expect good conversion rate.

If your onpage optimization is proper then you don't need to worry about other factors.

Not true in any competitive niche. You need to have backlinks to seem more important than the other sites.
      Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

Referral traffic might die off in the future. You need more than one traffic source in play if you want to sleep well at night.

That really depends on the referral traffic. Sometimes a story might be trending somewhere (facebook, reddit, etc), but after a while , the traffic slowly dies off. New stories, new trends, less interest. That's the nature of viral marketing. I could probably go into more detail if I knew what the referral traffic was.

You don't need to worry about SEO. But you have to care about SEO. Check out Google Webmaster guideline and find out which on page SEO is really need to implement. And move forward accordingly.
