Anyone Else Running Into This - Keyword Search Related

Few weeks ago I came across a keyword phrase that Google said got 44,000 exact matches per month. Checked the competition (I use Micro Niche Finder and manually check) and it was terrible. So I build a site. Have it ranked in Yahoo, in the #3 spot. But still MIA in Google. Anyway, I start getting a hunch that this keyword phrase is not really searched at all. Checked it on WordTracker and they say it doesn't get searched. I'll wait until it ranks in Google to check the Analytics I have installed. My hunch says Google kw tool was way off....44,000 off.

On to today. Come across another kw phrase. Google says 12,100 exact a month. Competition is pathetic. Checked it in WordTracker, says it gets 46 searches a month.

Wtf?! I know neither tool is the end all be all and they are not 100% accurate. But it's not even close.

Is there a way to know for sure, without waiting, how many approximate searches a kw is getting?

I'm waiting on another adwords account to be verified so I can test it using that method. But that takes time and money (although hopefully only a few bucks, if that)

I just don't want to waste my time and $10 buying a domain and building a site around a kw phrase that I was under the impression was being searched for only to find out that's not the case.

    Wordtracker doesn't use same statisitcs as Google.. Google use Google search to track keywords.. WordTracker use others..

    I realize that. But a difference between 44,000 (and 12,000) searches is a bit extreme.

      Not necessarily.. you also have to remember that Google can be off too.. I Know the only way to know for sure is to use a search based PPC campaign, and look out for the impressions. :-)

      Why do you think it is extreme?

      WordTracker is using data from Dogpile and Metacrawler (this is quote from their page About Wordtracker). And the search volumes of Dogpile and Metacrawler is a spit in the ocean compared to Google search volumes.

      That is why when it comes down to huge differnece between Google keyword tool and wordtracker - this is absolutely logical.

    Hi dv8,

    I have heard many folks describe a situation like yours, but when I investigated I have always found that the wrong data was being used by the researcher. To get the proper data you must locate the Match type selector and select Exact. Then you need to make sure that you have the "results are tailored to the languages and countries" setting to U.S. (or the country where your site is hosted) and use the data from the "Local Search Volume" column.

    If you are sure that you have all these settings correct and you are getting the same results, please PM me with the details and I'll look into it for you.

    So using PPC is the best way to check the actual search count.
    But the problem is that may be cost you some money.

      Yes, it will cost some money, but probably much less money than a SEO campaign based on wrong assumptions. Using PPC to test the financial viability of a set of keywords is all about saving money.

    Just used Traffic Travis to check keyword search count.

    It gives a daily figure, but it is in line with the Google monthly figure. But I wonder if it pulls the data from Google, which means it's irrelevant then.

    But, the kw phrase I referred to from a few weeks ago that Google claimed got 44,000, Traffic Travis says zero. So I guess it doesn't pull its info from Google.

    Haha, nothing is making sense now.

    I've run into this in the past as well. Wasted money on a domain and time on building a quick 5 page site. I never understood it and just moved on. So I would be very interested in knowing how this plays out because it is irritating at best.

      Exactly! I got all excited thinking I stumbled onto a goldmine only to find out I wasted my time. Looking to avoid that in the future.

    What dburk said in both his posts.

    And you are correct, the only way to get a real measure is to run an Adwords campaign, insuring that your keywords, match type, bid, and budget allow for impressions on every search.

    If there really is very little search volume, you won't have to worry about cost, and if there is good volume, well, just make sure you're sending the traffic to a monetized landing page. And of course, check your campaign often, and shut it down if it looks like you're seeing more than very little volume.

    It could be a black-hatter protecting a niche. There's software that will query Google over and over, using the same keywords, which inflates the search count.

    Next, Joe Seo comes by and does his own keyword research in the niche and finds some keywords with high numbers, so he goes after these keywords instead of the ones that are the really profitable ones.
