Stupid question, I have seen my competitors using a lot of tags for their listings in bookmarking sites.

For example:

cheap used cars trucks vans

I only use two tags

used cars

Asuming both listings have same number of people bookmarking them, which one has higher probability to appear first in bookmarking site search engine? the one with only 2 tags or the other?

Thanks

Your juice will be diluted by the number of keywords so the second ought to rank higher for used cars, but the first would rank for trucks vans. In theory, at least.

  • It depends on what you are asking. If a person searches a specific social site that uses tags as a way to return relevant sites then the person with more tags assuming all other factors are equal would more likely appear in more results. Now the question is would they appear higher in the results. That would depend on the search engine. I try to use as many truly relevant tags as they will allow up to about 5 or 6.

You need to pick your own strategy then live with the results.

It's not a stupid question, but like so many things online there is a lot of speculation, guesswork, and testing to see what works for you.

One thing you could do BEFORE you post your own sites is search for the tags on your competitors and see where they are ranking and use that as your guide for that specific site.

People get in too much of a rush to just drop links everywhere. You are much better off taking the time to figure out what works and make a quality listing than just chasing after volume that no one will ever find.

I was told that we should make sure that our tags are organized. Keep everything simple. Make it easy for users to locate you through your bookmarks.

Well in my opinion, if the person is searching for used cars then the second one could rank higher but still not sure but for used vans or trucks the first one will definitely rank higher than the second tags.
