Problem Geotagging Photos

This relates to SEO as Geotagging photos, (adding location Info) can have a big effect in ranking local sites.
I used picasa to geotag some photos I wanted to add to a blog as a test.
I entered an address into the box for location info and clicked the search button.
It asked if I wanted to move the photo there and I clicked OK.
The location info was added successfully.
When I clicked on "properties" of the highlighted photo
it showed latitude and longitude.
However, when I saved the photo to my files
the location of the photo now said desktop.
What am I missing here?

Why? Do many people search for images based on location?

Honest question, I have no clue if they do. I don't usually give a toss myself which is why would not think that this sort of thing has any value for SEO.
    Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

I think what he is saying is that geotagging images will help when you put those images on location based pages of a website for a local company.

I'm interested in hearing if that's true or not.

Naming and alt texting images with a city name could help with SEO, so I wonder if geotagging could as well?

Oh it will help alright. Becker at Sourcewave just did a video which he removed
after a few days. Dozens of students got dramatic ranking improvement
when they added location info to photos on local business sites.
I think the reason it works so well is google has a mania for accuracy
and reliable info. So when you geotag a photo you are confirming
on google maps the exact location of a business. The goog loves
that. There I go again giving away secrets!

          Bump.

I am interested in knowing if Geotagging images does give any weight to rankings and if so why you are having a problem with the tags sticking.

Forget everything you think you know & build a few strong followed backlinks pointing directly at the image URL (not page URL). Use keyword anchor-text.

Trust me, you'll rank the image with a few strong links.

    It's that simple.

And once the image is ranking well, then the webpage its on will rank better?

        No.

The image will rank, but unless you break the Google frame traffic will have to jump through hoops before they land on your page.

Google likes to move the target (Google Image frames). Look at some of the Wallpaper sites, those guys are usually up to date on the latest frame breaking code (view their source code) for any images you notice breaking frames on Google Images.

Either way, links pointing directly at the image URL is how images are ranked (If you're serious about ranking images).

It seems like the OP wants to geotag the images in order to rank the local webpage they are on better. I don't think he is looking to rank images.

So those links that you mentioned he should point at the images, it's probably better to aim those at the webpage itself, no?

So use the GEO keywords as backlink anchor-text.

Same end result with no guessing, image ranked.
