Google ranking strategy

I am looking to purchase a domain name, and have heard that Google actually takes into account where you purchase your domain name from. In terms of ranking, Google will rank a site better or worse dependent on where it's domain name was purchased. It seems that domains purchased at premium domain buying websites (such as enom.com) are likely to get ranked higher by Google than sites with domains bought at cheaper sites such as Godaddy. This is because Google views these cheaper domain purchasing sites poorly as they are more likely to have a history of user abuse. Has anyone heard of or had experience of this?

Nope never heard of that one before!

However cheaper domains in general such as a .com over a .info is correct.

.com .org and .net rank best (i find .net ranks slightly lower than the other two).

Then its .info last as they were abused and used for spamming!

    Hope that helps.

No I never heard of google ranking based on where you buy the domain, only on the extension as Tom mentioned.

        Hi geoweb,

I must admit your post made me laugh uncontrollably. I don't know if your intention was serious, but in is one of the most ridiculous claims I've heard in a while.

In case you are not aware, Godaddy and Enom's pricing are very similar. GoDaddy has been so successful in part due to its world class customer service. They offer a 24/7 support with a toll free number. You get a real person usually with very little hold time and they stay on the line with you until they answer every question.

I'm not sure how you came to think of Enom as a "premium domain buying website" and Godaddy as a cheaper site, but the facts do not support that assertion. They each have their strengths and they are both fine companies, but I fail to see how one companies registrants could be classified as superior to the other. Wouldn't there be a need to look at each registrant individually?

Clearly Google ranks web pages by relevance to the search query and other factors that take into consideration trust and reliability (domain age and length of registration) but relevance is the most prominent factor. Never have I seen or even heard of your domain registrar being a factor, nor do I think it could be a reliable indicator of anything meaningful in SERP rankings.

where you register has nothing to do with it.

But just use Moniker and tell Godaddy to bite you!

  • I bought these nike shoes once at the Nordstroms Rack discount outlet. All my friends laughed at me because they immediately knew they were discount shoes. You know how?

Turns out it doesn't matter where you buy your nikes.

Seriously... Google could care less. They rank content plain and simple. That would be some marketing ploy that would be leveraged very hard by the big guys if it were even remotely true. It would also be very anti competitive and catch the wrath of big brother in a hurry.

Ok, Ok, I think I got the message. Got back from a break after a couple of weeks and saw these responses. So it seems that what I had heard was fictitious...so I guess I can go ahead and purchase the domain name from anywhere. Thanks for the info...

That is an honest question for a newby. There is so much information that you don't know what to believe. These answers made me laugh so hard though that my wife made fun of me!! I guess she thinks I'm a tool.
