For those of you who know content curation & their respective tools...

How is content curation a potential danger/pitfall?

I'm researching/writing up a piece on this, and wanted to get some further thoughts. My thoughts so far...

-Original content is key focus for new/growing site blogs
- When and how for posting "curated" pieces: attribute to author, always add your original thoughts, 100+ words of original content
- If you post curation pieces, at most, 25% of the content you produce should be that. IE a weekly curation blog roundup
-Dangers of relying on curation which can be easy to do "I don't have time to make an original post, let me throw up this one that I like from someone else already on the web"
-Dangers of google penalties for any duplicacy?

What are the good things about curation/how can businesses use them well?

The curator has no clue what 'curate' means and will just assemble a bunch of content.

Ending up with boring and useless or worse.

From Google's point of view, they end up with duplicate content...

-Original content is key focus for new/growing site blogs Why?... Anthologies of short stories have no original content, but they can be awesome... If my Auntie were to write a short story, you'd commit harakiri by the middle of page 2. But it would be an original short story!
    - When and how for posting "curated" pieces: attribute to author, always add your original thoughts, 100+ words of original content Yes to attribution, otherwise it's plagiarism; yes to your thoughts on it (but let's not forget the point is to have some expertise... Expertise trumps original, if by original you mean what I mean by it: new, one-of-a-kind), no to 100+ content... If you can say something useful about whatever piece you've collected in 17 words, don't stretch it out to be 100. Don't stretch it out to be 20!
    - If you post curation pieces, at most, 25% of the content you produce should be that. IE a weekly curation blog roundup You could have nothing but curation... What makes or breaks this kind of thing is expertise... You ever been to a museum? To a special exhibit at a museum? They display the pieces based on chronology or some theme... Which means, someone at the museum knows something about art. 100% of the pieces were not created by the museum... Can you transfer that to blog curation? Theoretically possible... You find awesome content and you have awesome thoughts of your own on it. My imagination says it can happen.
-Dangers of relying on curation which can be easy to do "I don't have time to make an original post, let me throw up this one that I like from someone else already on the web"No. Dangers of curation are not understanding what curation is, not having something useful to say about the content selected that the content selected didn't say (better)).
-Dangers of google penalties for any duplicacy?

No penalties... What will happen, if you copy too much, Google's gonna say, Seen this somewhere else, not going to display it in searches... So, no organic traffic. That's not a penalty, though... (Because if you were to do better SEO than whoever SEO'd the content Google shows, Google will show your page and tell the other guys, Sorry, peeps, but I've seen this somewhere more popular; not going to show it.

Have something new/deep/creative/unusual to say about the curated pieces.

You can use them as springboards to showcase your own ideas/products.

You can use them to teach your readers something you want them to know without seeming to do so.
