How do you change how leads appear?

Currently all my visitors are coming from referrals, but I want to change that so it appears like they're coming from somewhere else (eg search engine, social ect)

if I used a url shortner would that affect it? or maybe reroute it through a different domain?

    I don't want my wife to see all the bad websites I've been coming from, so I need a way to loop it so that it thinks I've been on a different website than I actually have been on, anyone know how youd do this?

    Obviously a URL shortner will hide the previously visited webiste.
