      Below is a meta tag example taken from one of my websites. It was mostly provided by the Yoast SEO Wordpress plugin. If you are using WP I would recommend it. Google aside, many search engines like Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Baidu are very fond of metatags.

      <!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v2.3.4 - https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/ -->
      <meta name="description" content="All bestselling Ebooks in Pdf format. Weed them and Reap."/>
      <link rel="canonical" href="https://www.ebookthriftshop.com/" />
      <meta property="og:locale" content="en_US" />
      <meta property="og:type" content="website" />
      <meta property="og:title" content="Ebook Thrift Shop" />
      <meta property="og:description" content="All bestselling Ebooks in Pdf format. Weed them and Reap." />
      <meta property="og:url" content="https://www.ebookthriftshop.com/" />
      <script type='application/ld+json'>{"@context":"http:\/\/schema.org","@type":"WebSite","url":"https:\/\/www.ebookthriftshop.com\/","name":"","potentialAction":{"@type":"SearchActi on","target":"https:\/\/www.ebookthriftshop.com\/?s={search_term_string}","query-input":"required name=search_term_string"}<!---->}</script>

        I agree that using good meta tags is important. And meta keywords are not one of them.

        Here's an interesting article how Yoast, one of the most popular wordpress SEO plugins, disables meta keywords by default: https://yoast.com/meta-keywords/

          If you still insist on using them after reading the references already given, I'd go with the 'human-friendly' version. Having 2-3 "real" keywords probably won't hurt you in the major SEs, and might help if there are minor, niche specific sites which use them.

          But if you're thinking SEO, leave them out entirely. If you can do it naturally, work your most important one into your title and/or description tags. Google, among others, will bold them if they match the search term, which helps you attract the human eyeballs you really need.

          Why I use them, for example for automatic link directories, address pages and more.

          What they do is use your meta title, description and keywords to add you in their directories.
          It's free publicity that might help you because you will be added to the right categories.

          And those pages get found by Google, Yahoo and Bing again.

        Google is the most important in the free world. I'm sure the OP is not going for china.

        Google does not use facebook junk, so og: crap is out.

        What else is junk? Automatic link directories and anything else that uses
        meta keywords.

        Want more junk? The replies touting meta keywords.

        No wonder you people fail. You stress out on what you should put
        as meta keywords. I can tell you want NOT to put: for, sale,...

        Bing and yahoo are the same...for the most part. So anyone who says
        bing AND yahoo, is nuts. Speaking of nuts....yahoo will soon be using
        google search for some things.

        Yandex? Well, like I said. Only search engine that matters for 99.9999%
        of the people here, is google. I can't think of a single post in Cyrillic.
