I am designing a website that is like an online magazine about a product and unfortunately product.com is not available and is parked however theproduct.com and productmagazine.com are available. Is it bad to purchase theproduct.com.

Also is there a way to remind people that the website is theproduct.com not product.com.

Finally, what about productmagazine.com is it better that theproduct.com.

I'm sorry to say that, But "theproduct.com" is poor. Why don't you go on Google to find some information about how to create the good domain name?

there are few domain name search tools which you can use. like Available domain suggestions,expired and expiring domain name, whois lookup | DomainsBot, Domain Search etc

No you should not add "the" word before product keyword in your domain. It is not looking good.
As everyone has suggest you some tips before you choose your domain name. Please read them carefully and choose appropriate domain name.
