Market Samurai - "Google Adwords Accounts Error"

I recently switched to Market Samurai for keyword research. After running a couple keywords, I received the error message:

"Google Adwords Account Error - Google are returning a message that they have detected unusual traffic coming from your IP address. Please wait a few hours before trying again."

I assume that Market Samurai is bombarding the Google Keyword Planner with requests so it cuts you off for a bit. My questions to other Market Samurai users are:

1) What is the best way to work around this? Are you limited to just researching a few keywords a day?

2) Is there a concern with being permanently banned (instead of just a few hours)?

Thanks, Sam VDW

You won't get a permanent ban.

I would request a refund though. Market Samurai is a useless POS. The data it pulls does not help to pick keywords, and it is so freaking slow.

What are good programs that you, or other internet marketers, here use?

I have some experience with other programs and each of them has been a big bust. I'm beginning to become tired of spending money on keyword research programs that don't work or are obsolete shortly after purchasing them.

Feed Market Samurai (in settings) a few proxy addresses and you'll be able to do a lot more.

@MikeFriedman - Thanks for the info about the ban. And as for its usability, I'm not impressed so far but I guess got sold by how many other people are stating that they use it. So hard to find a useful keyword tool that I might just go back to doing it manually.

@DABK - I figured as much. Unfortunately if I have to constantly switch my IP address just to use the program, that lowers its usability in my eyes. But I appreciate the suggestion, that was the only thing I could come up with too.

You don't constantly have to change anything. You feed it the proxy addresses and it rotates them automatically.

It's not that great of a tool anymore, though...

The problem with any of these keyword tools is they do a lousy job of judging competition. They take junk like backlink count, if the keywords are in the title, age of the domain, domain authority, how many results are in the search index, and then try to tell you that is how to measure competition.

None of them take into account link quality or internal linking (which is a huge factor). The one that gets it closest is actually Moz's keyword tool, but it is based on the Moz link database, which I find to be lacking. They are at least trying to get it right though.

No matter what your keyword is, you have 3 competitors. That's it. The top 3 in the SERPs. Nobody else matters. Analyze those.

I don't know what you mean by anymore. It never was a very good tool.

It got tons of hype though.

I mean, it seems to be getting worse and worse... And it gotten pretty bad when it had to switch to counting on PA and TC and MD and LB and GB and all those initals that help you none.

Before that, when Google was making PR public and relying more on link number than now, it was better. Still not as good as you looking at the pages in #1 position, but better than now.

I get that you want to use a tool to come up with keyword ideas... But I don't see why people rely so heavily on tools to judge competition... Once you've picked your handful of likelies... it doesn't take that much to look at what #1 for each is doing and determine, more accurately than any tool, if you have the skills, money and patience to overtake them.

@yukon - Thanks, I will give SEMrush a shot. I've used it before but kind of glossed over it for the specific purpose of searching for keywords.

@ MikeFriedman - Simple rule, look at the top three and see what you have to do to beat them. I like it... And I agree that most of the information these tools look at isn't useful now, it's more like filler that they can easily show a client.

@DABK - Honestly after this I'm probably done with using paid software for keyword research. I did a lot better doing it using free online apps on my own.

It's junk they use to rope in newbies mostly.

Get the SEMrush competition keyword data offline in a CSV file & open it with something like Open Office. The spreadsheet is way easier on the eyes & no distractions compared to the SEMrush website/page.

Try SEMrush, run a few same niche competition reports. That will give you the competitions:
    • Keyword
    • Ranked SERP position
    • SERP traffic volume (rough estimate)
    • Ranked page URL

Usually the ranked competition page URL on the SEMrush report is the same text as the page <title> so comparing that to each specific keyword they're ranking for gives you a little insight into whether the competition is even trying to rank or not. Sometimes webpages rank just because nobody else is really trying, those keywords can still have traffic.

My point is, If a competition URL text (page title) on the SEMrush report is vague but they're still ranking on the first page of the SERPs for their keyword, the keyword probably isn't very competitive. That's not always the case but it's a good indicator while browsing the SEMrush spreadsheet data.

SEMrush isn't an end all solution but IMO it's a good place to find decent traffic keywords.

I don't have such a problem with MS.. I am using it since a few months and I am pretty happy with it, the results are amazing, so if you just have to switch your IP to use it.. It's not such a big deal!
