Way to get backlinks & social shares (Charlie Sheen Method)

We'll call this the Charlie Sheen Method. I'm not going to pull a Brian Dean on you guys and tell you that this will work for everybody and every site.

This does require some setup.

On your site create a separate category named blog, or roll. Edit the menus on your site so this category is not there. Instead shove a link to it in your footer, or at least a ways down your page, definitely below the content. I would put it just before your disclaimers and privacy policy. Make sure new posts you make to this category are excluded from showing up in any related links plugins, new posts widgets, and you certainly don't want this content linked to from your site's homepage. If you're a control freak like me, you will just install wordpress a second time into the /blog/ folder.

The purpose of this "blog" is to use this content to generate social shares and attract backlinks, so the content only needs to be slightly related to our site, technically not related at all. So for example, if we have a site about oscillating fan reviews, we find and post a picture of a cat sitting on an oscillating fan and share that all over social media. Big companies do this all the time so don't be too worried about it.

What to post to your site's blog:

Well since this is the Charlie Sheen method, my first post would be about how your mind is completely blown that Charlie Sheen is HIV positive and you are somehow completely shocked and you can't believe it! Even though the guy probably slept with a quarter of the state of California. Make a giant list of 172 ways the world will be different now that Charlie Sheen is publicly acknowledging that he has a disease that was basically cured a decade ago. Talk about how his life is going to be totally ruined now that he has to take drugs every day in order to stay alive! Maybe come up with an infographic explaining the mass devastation that the "evil" Charlie Sheen monster has created. Just go insane with it, the more creative it is the more it will get shared and the greater chance it has to get back links.

Other ideas about blog posts to your site's blog:

Anything about the holidays, every major holiday make a post to your site on your site's blog and share it all over your social media accounts. Do this with your email list as well on big holidays.

Any news in the business, this is obvious, if a new product comes out or there is anything in the main stream media, talk about it on your blog. Depending on the news I would consider emailing the list, remember that you're not channel19 and that your list probably doesn't need to know everything that's going on, so important stuff in email only. This also works if some "Guru" is posting fake BS to their site to try to attract a bunch of links. You can make a scathing post and call them out on it.

Any viral content you can find will work, keep it short and simple. There should be some relevance, again you're not failblog. Or if you attempt to do the "infographic method" that's discussed on the "SEO Tabloid" sites, I would just shove the image there, this is a method to get traffic and social shares, any links you get doing this will likely be garbage. So it doesn't matter where you put the image, mymoneysite.com/blog/great-infographic is fine.

I have a sort of follow up question to this... How does posting content that you don't want to rank for effect your rankings? For example we are wedding photographers and want to rank for say london wedding photographer. How does posting about the holidays or other unrelevant content negatively effect this? Surely google will be like, i have no idea what this website is about?

It's mostly a method to get traffic and shares. Since there's only one link on your main site to the blog there is very little "drain." So this gives you a place to put all your silly stuff that could potentially attract links. The blog's navigation should include the site's main navigation. So you're funneling social traffic to the site.

It you think of it like tiered link building, it's like you have a tier1 site piggy backing off your money site.

      Look here:
      Code:
      http://www.nextadvisor.com/blog/
The link to the blog is buried in the footer on the main site. They regularly post to the blog and mention it on social. NA pulls the blog content headlines into the index page, I've seen many sites that don't do this. The index page is just links to the offers/reviews/products, with again, the blog link buried in the footer.

Social signal is very much important because google is tired from Blackhat back links therefore google make ranking through social signal because it cannot be counted as blackhat seo..
