How to do these sites have so many links and no idea what keywords are?

So I was going over the October 2015 Roundup Income Report on Matt H's useless site. This is really mind blowing to me. How do you make 29k a month, have like 40k backlinks, and not know what a keyword is?

Best keyword: living on a sailboat 4(5) 1,300

Is this some magic blogging strategy that I don't know about?

Are they waiting until they have 50k backlinks?

    That's why they have so many links -- they aren't trying. That whole "content is king" thing rearing it's ugly head lol

      I guess... It would be easier to just build sites focused around stuff with commercial intent and just do SEO. There's guys making that kind of money with a 50 page site and 20 quality backlinks...

      Honestly after looking at the site more carefully, they should start actually ranking on their insanely hard keywords with another 10k-20k backlinks so maybe that's what the plan is. The onpage SEO is basically nonexistant as well, other then UX, and the server isn't trash either.
