Hi guys,

anyone have any definitive answers to what happened on nov 19th?

I know j Muller said something might have happened but is there any other analysis that can be tracked back to fact or data?

We think its a brand update as the effect we're seeing is brand search drops for our clients

thanks
mark

John Mueller post some of the most useless info. on the web. Seriously, that's all he post is fluff, stuff that doesn't even matter.

    True exchange:

Question: "Is link building in any way good?"
Mueller: "In general, I'd try to avoid that."

John Mueller is a Google employee. You need to take anything he says with that in mind. Google of course would prefer that NO link building whatsoever takes place, by any website owner. They want ALL links to be naturally occurring. The whole idea of "SEO" goes against Google's wishes.

Another great reason not to follow tabloid SEO sites.

Google: Try To Avoid Link Building Because It Can Do More Harm Than Good

"is link building in any way good?"

      "That is a good question.

In general, I’d try to avoid that.

So that you are really sure that your content kind of stands on its own and make it possible for other people of course to link to your content. Make it easy, maybe, put a little widget on your page, if you like this, this is how you can link to it. Make sure that the URLs on your web site are easy to copy and paste. All of those things make it a little bit easier.

We do use links as part of our algorithm but we use lots and lots of other factors as well. So only focusing on links is probably going to cause more problems for your web site that actually helps."
So a guy who works at google, who was talking to "webmasters", not SEOs, who doesn't have access to how the algorythm works, is giving advice about links, and a website that is effectively "The National Enquirer of SEO" made a report on it.

      Got it.

By the logic of that title, you should never, ever do anything:
eating foot can do more harm than good (some people actually die from it)
exercising can do more harm than good (some people actually die from it)
getting married can do more harm than good (some people actually die at the hand of a spouse)
walking down the street can do more harm than good (some people have died doing it)
and so on and so on.

With that kind of logic, isn't it best to ignore them?

I agree, Barry Schwartz (SEL) has been scraping the bottom of the barrel just so he has something to post on his site (SEL).

Google’s John Mueller was captured saying live in a Google+ hangout on Friday morning that webmasters should avoid trying to focus on link building. John went on to add that doing so can ultimately lead to more harm than good for your web site.
Really John was captured? With what, a tranquilizer gun or a snare net?

Every 7th post is about John Mueller said... boring useless info. that doesn't have anything to do with ranking pages.

It looks like Barry is keyword stuffing his site trying to rank for the keyword John Mueller.

Not sure if genuinely unable to use the internet, or making a sarcastic quip. Maybe it's that "social media agency mumbai" signature.

I know two grandmothers who had SEO / webdev blogs. Of course that's completely fine in my books, but unfortunately they both suffered from serious case of Dunning-Kruger effect. You know, the kind of WP users who give us all a bad name.

probably because seo's dont blog any more... there was a time everyone had a blog and tried to be the defacto expert in their field but i guess it fizzled out with the onset of mature social media platforms.

Err... Nowadays everyone and their grandma has a SEO blog. Internet is filled with posts declaring some definite developments on some arbitrary date, and other noise.

There's a couple of "Google forecasts" that I find sort of interesting. If there really were some larger-scale development those should probably show something. By default I don't believe a thing that these sites show me, but it's fun in the same way as reading a horoscope.

You sure about your grandma? Coz I think I saw her at the SEO convention in Atlanta 2 years ago!
