e.g. for getting 10 long tail key words on page one, how much is reasonable?

Check out your competition for those keywords - considering their on and off page optimization, what would it take to beat the ones on the latter spots on the first page.
If they are not well optimized on the pages and have few backlinks, you should be able to get to first page in less than 2-3 months.
The challenge is finding the providers who can get you there, the market is saturated with SEO providers and packages with little to no proof or guarantee for the authenticity of their methods.

thanks eabuilder, you're right, too many providers and packages to find one who is able to make it really work. that's why i came here and try to learn to SEO by myself, but still no idea how and what and where to start.

You need to define "expert" here. What kind of service you are looking for? Also duration of your work is an issue here. An expert could accept your job offer despite the amount of money. But your budget needs to be certain.

For a completely customized service that offers variety and high quality links as well as full on page audits and back link audits to prevent against and clear up any penguin and panda issues, this is not absurd....

Now if you are talking about a one size fits all approach to every project, that builds junk links and does not address anything else, that's a different story...

I know what the prices can range from. I was laughing at how it was stated in the previous post. I have charged over $5,000 for SEO and i have charged less then $50. It just depends on the client and how much they want to invest.

Well, usually SEOs do not work full time on any one website no matter how much they bill for their work. What you're describing is the normal scenario.

How much? I'd say the prices start from less than $100, and the sky is the limit.

Obviously it's hard to find inexpensive but good SEO service. I'd ask a SEO what they think of your site, what kind of problems they see, and what they're going to do about it. Ask about on-page problems, and also about their opinion about your backlinks. Ask what kind of reports they provide. If you do not understand something ask them to explain. You may still not fully understand, but this is good way to learn about them and their practices.

In my opinion any IT pro should be able to explain their stuff on general level to a reasonably receptive and intelligent person who can operate a computer. If they can't they just might be a pain to work with.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?
