Backlinks and 301 Redirect

I am getting some conflicting info or maybe I just did not understand it to begin with. First, I am not a SEO guy just a local business owner but like to research things if I can do them myself or at least know what to expect if I need to hire someone. So go easy as it may seem I am over my pay grade on this.

I developed a new website as I was not happy with the functionality and ability to do changes to pages with my old host/website. I own the domain for the old site but may get some push back getting the actual content as this was a business I purchased but that is an entire different discussion.

I want to do 301 redirects to my new website. I was going to map similar pages to the new site. I was doing this to preserve the backlinks and link juice from the old site. But now someone said that I will lose the backlinks doing this. If that is the case why dont I just do a domain redirect to preserve any traffic and not waste my time and money hiring someone to set up the htaccess to do this. I received this advice on a different sub forum but I knew I could get the straight answer here.
