Any reason our website keyword rankings have all gone?

Our website's 5 main Keywords have been ranking on Page One of Google for last 2 yrs. When we recently checked the rankings, we now find that none of the keywords are ranked in top 100.?

We only do minimal white-hat SEO as the Keywords do not have a lot of competition.

Any clues as to why the keyword rankings would just disappear like that?

* Updated. Our Rankings are now back again

There is no such thing as a sandbox checking tool. Nor would a site that has been around for 2 years be "sandboxed".

So what exactly does your "white hat" SEO consist of?

We place 2 articles with back-links on Blogger.com and on 2 other local directories each month. We do about 20 new social bookmarks every month. And we write one new article for our website with internal page link every month and we write 1 new press release (PRwire.com) every 3 months.
Our website has been ranking in top 10 for 5 main keywords for over 2 yrs.

What have your competitors doing recently?

Any messages from Google in the Webmaster side of the world?

Blogger? How do you do that? Blogger.com's free version TOS: no using blogger to boost the ranking of another site. Did they shut down some sites you had links from?

For all we know OP changed a CMS theme & lost most of his internal links or... changed URL structure without doing 301s to the new URLs per each internal page, or...

      Fail.

There's no anchor-text ratio. If that was the case (it's not) no site on the net would rank for it's own branded domain name.

  • I suggest you to use Xenu to check the outbound links of your website and see if you find something fishy. It did happen with our site a year back, I found a malicious code in my website header of the wordpress theme. Got it corrected and now rankings are back to normal

Thanks. I checked the links using Xenu, and it found no broken links or faults.

Google consider these top positioned websites as a hub of information to the users because they offer regular new, interesting and beneficial information. Which means Google like active websites on top positions for the audience then the inactive or abandoned sites are placed in lower positions in rankings.

there are many factors for that sitution
1- inrease the number of comptitors
2- do you not update the content.
3- do you not make new high pr dofollow backlinks
    and so on.
Please send me your website link or contact me at skype: dearhussainn

As some one said, check your backlink profile and see if there is any link from low quality sites and if there is any, remove it immediately.

Have you received any message in your webmaster tool? There can be many factors which results in sudden lost of ranking. Are you updating content in your site on regular basis? This is also a main factor for ranking well in search engines.

      Google has no such rule.

Why only 2 local directories? You should have been in all of them by now. There is no need to only do 2 a month. I would stop the social bookmarking. That is a total waste of time and provides zero benefit. I also would not do a press release every 3 months. I would do a press release if you have something newsworthy to share about the business. It doesn't matter when it is. It might happen in back to back months. It might never happen. Just throwing a press release out there every 3 months just to throw a press release out there does not make much sense. It should not be treated as an article dump.

A few things I would do. Check Webmaster Tools (Search Console now) and see if there are any messages from Google. Comb through your site looking for malicious content. If the site was hacked, and Google detected it, you could likely see a drop. There might be a delay in them reporting that in Webmaster Tools though. Check to see if there have been any hosting issues. If a host goes down a lot, Google might drop the site down in the rankings.

      I would start there.

@lucyberrette I can't believe you were the first one to ask this... as in... that was the first thing I had to think.

How long since it lost it's rankings? Is your site still indexed?

I once was on the receiving end of a mega penalty where Google deindexed my VERY established site... one page at a time until it was deindexed. It was painful to watch.

Exactly 18 months later (to the date) it was back... with its top rankings and all

It's definitely not competition (unless they spam linked to your blog to hell and back). If competition was to blame for any other reason than that, you would have lost a couple spots... not the first 100. At least not this fast!

Now I'm really curious: How long did your rankings disappear for?

Btw... congrats on dominating for so long!

        Yeah I'm glad too.

The Ranking disappeared for about 7 days. At first I thought it was my rank checker software so I also tried a couple of online rank checkers, but they also showed my keywords not ranking in top 100. Then last night whilst watching TV I decided to check rankings using my mobile phone an Google Incognito. To my surprise all keyword ranks were back in top 10.
So, this morning I tried using my ranking software (Rank Tracker) again and it showed that all rankings were good again.
So I don't know what it was, but all is good now, and I hope it stays.

        Thanks for your help.

This is the reason forum posting doesn't help people: they don't read the thread they're proposing to add their comment in before they add their comment.

Some examples of unnatural, spammy link building tactics include:
      • Reciprocal linking

      • Paid links
      • Site-wide links (such as footer or blog-roll links)
      • Links from low-quality or generic directories

If Google stopped ranking some of your pages, then maybe your site has been penalized for something.

You should re-check the off-page SEO you have done so far. And also check all of your backlinks - to see if maybe your competitors have something to do with this.

You know, competitors can play nasty sometimes. Just think about this. what if your competitors did some black hat SEO for your pages, so they can get penalized?

I have heard of people doing this on purpose. I think is messed up. That is why you should always really check the backlinks your site is getting. Check backlinks on every page.

      I hope this helps!

Google now become more smart and smarter like peoples. A simple thing which made our keywords to the tremendous drop in SERP's today. So we have to be aware of what we doing.
Avoid same contents for all bookmarks and other link sharing places.
Unique content alone will give you better result than what other techniques could give.

That's gotta be the worst piece of advice of the week. This "start again with a new domain" is stupid and unnecessarily destructive in most cases, and you should not hand it out as a cure for all.

However, this user already posted that their rankings are back.

I once went to a doctor when I was a teenager because my mom insisted I had chicken pox. To be sure, I went to get checked out and the doctor looks at me and says "Allergies!"

Shocked, considering I did not have any allergies that I knew of, I asked if he had any idea what caused the allergy. His response was the same as yours "only you know what you have eaten in the last 24 hours!"

      He prescribed me allergy drugs.

With allergy prescription in hand, I was shocked even more. So I repeated my initial question: "Don't you think it's chicken pox? My mom says it's chicken pox!"

Him, second guessing, takes another look. Then he grabs my prescription, tears it in half and says "Acne, you have acne!" as he starts writing another prescription for acne drugs (which I later learned could have had suicidal side-effects!)

I was so frustrated at this point that I just took his prescription, went home and continued scratching my arse until the chicken pox subsided.

Moral of this story? If you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk!
