Category Page vs Product Page SEO

Hi All!

First post on warrior forum. Hoping you guys can help me out here.

I'm trying to get ranking on the keyword 'valuheart'. Valuheart is a generic heartworm medicine for dogs. It comes in three sizes. What I've done is put all the product information on the category page and only very brief information on the individual product pages whereby the only unique information is the size of your dog.

Currently ranked on Page 2 for the keyword 'valuheart'...but google has indexed my product page for the large dog size not the category page. I'm confused as to why it did this, because I want my category page to be my landing page for this product.

Hoping to get your thoughts and comments on this one! Thanks in advance!

    Could it also be something to do with my on-page optimization for the category page? Do I need to submit a sitemap to google?

    For instance...I didn't get any backlinks for my item pages and managed to get onto page 2 of google. It was only more recently that I pulled the content out of the item pages and into the category page, as I didn't want google to penalize me for duplicate content. Now I've dropped further down on page 2 of google.
