Wordpress, Home Page Ranking Over Inner Pages, Any Idea Why?

Hi Everyone,

I have a WordPress site that has always ranked very well, although recently I have noticed that on new posts, the home page is ranking instead of the well optimised inner pages.

For example: myblog.com is ranking for the keyword instead of: myblog.com/why-is-the-sky-blue/?

The strange thing is, when I first publish the post the inner page goes to the first page of Google, then a few days later the homepage ranks instead of it (not first page).

I don't think there are any punishments, as older posts are top of Google, first page, just these recent new posts are not, well at first they do, then as I said a few days later, the homepage takes over.

Any ideas?

    That's how it usually happens: the homepage has more links and is about the same or a closely related thing or uses the keyword.

    You want another page to rank, get it some backlinks.

    That's 100% normal.

    Usually new pages/blog posts are more optimized for specific search phrases and rank pretty well for them, which would outrank your root domain/main page which is what you're suggesting.

    This is not always the case though, the two biggest reasons that your root domain would outrank your posts for these more specific/long tail keyword(s) would be:

    - Your root domain is obviously going to be higher authority on every metric you could think of. Your individual blog post probably doesn't have any or many links pointing directly to it while your main page has many. As long as the content is pretty close Google is going to put the page that it deems 'better' higher. Also I noticed you're talking about new posts, note that your content from your new posts is on your main page for a while before getting pushed off (or at least an excerpt of it) so that improves your onpage SEO for your main pag eat first too; consider checking after it drops off to see if its still outranking your single blog post.

    - These are higher competition than your probably realize. The reason that a blog post will rank well for a long tail or more specific search phrase is that its usually a long-tail keyword/phrase that doesn't have very much if any competition and thus just having your content optimized for the search phrase and then the power/authority of your blog in general is enough to get it ranking. On higher competition phrases you have to actually do some backlinking to a specific blog post if you want it to rank well.

    So basically this is normal, nothing to worry about. If its an issue or bugging you do a backlinking campaign to your individual posts you want to rank as well (plus its good SEO to not have 100% of your links just point to your root domain).
