Should I setup another domain to track viral image traffic?

I am planning on doing some viral image sharing; the images would have a watermark with my money site. But if I do this then I will only see that the traffic is direct/typed in, not that it was specific to images.
I'm thinking of putting a different domain on the images in order to track that traffic. They would be redirected to my money site in this case. Of course the brand promotion is much less by doing this though.
Has anyone else thought through this same issue? I'd like to hear how you compromised, thanks!
