"The" in the domain name

Hey guys

How does google look at "The" in domain names with .com

Let me explain. So you want to pick up a url but its taken however it gets searched for. For example lets say dogtrainingvideos.com is taken so if assuming good content, when googled dog training videos then that website should come up because they typed the exact domain right? And if so then can't a competitor get the same high rank on search results by buying the exact same domain except adding "the" to that domain (thedogtrainingvideos.com)? So if searched for dog training videos, which one would rank higher, assuming both sites are identical (for the sake of this post).

In other words what role does "the" play in a url in regards to SEO

I'd rather not go there. It's pointless to assume that sites are identical because that never happens.

The site that gets more backlinks and better content probably ranks in this case. I think "the" makes the domain a little less brandable, but the Exact Match Domains aren't an important ranking factor any more.

One thing to consider: dog-training-videos.com. Some people say that this would help Google to recognize the words in the domain name better.

Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?
