multiple links from same site

I know that sitewide links get indentified and credited as one link in most cases. (MC said this and it actually jives with experience after about 2010.

However, I was noticing that google has a links from domain category and was wondering if anyone had any informed opinions on the value of getting multiple links from the same domain?

I've seen some sites ranking based on extensive interlinking with 4-5 co-owned sites so it might seem possible.

Yes that can happen but you have to always be thinking- what other links do they have?

Sometimes you see sites ranking and it looks like they have no links at all according to tools.

What is happening in this case is that they are getting links from bot-blocking properties that are usually PBNs(high powered links that cannot be found in the common link aggregation tools).

Good point. I forgot about that. I wish someone did a good case study on it. Like have 5 PBN sites linked to 1 site and then add a bunch more links from those sites and see if anything happened.

Google does not count multiple links from
        one site as only one.

"sitewide" links are a different animal.

Multiple links on the same page,
        would present some issues,
        if they were anchored differently,
        among other things.

        Amazon has multiple links on
the same domains to its stuff,
across its whole empire of sites.
        Including "sitewide" links, but not
truly. They are to their own sites.
        And google knows this.

Again, a different animal. At the
bottom of virtually every amazon page,
is a footer linking to dozens of their sites.
This creates literally thousands of links on
the same site to the same sites.

They do not try and hide their online empire.

Amazon does very, very, very useful things.

The bottom line is, if you or your seo is worrying
about this, move on to something better that is
        worth worrying or thinking about.
