Worth migrating site from .net to .com?

I have had a site at <myname>.net for several years. It isn't a hotbed of SEO magic, but I've got some search rankings that I don't want to lose.

I recently acquired the domain <myname>.com

Obviously .com has more prestige than .net, so my first though was to migrate my site to the .com and then 301 redirect the .net to the .com. But is this shortsighted? Should I just leave my site at the .net and redirect the .com? Is whatever .com prestige I'm gaining with people not worth whatever search engine goodness I'll lose when I migrate my site?

Would I be better off just having the .com redirect, TELLING people my site is the .com and letting them just find my long-standing .net site though the redirect? Or then will any new back-links I score to the .com site not help for my search rankings in the future?

    301 redirect them to your .com domain and I am talking about each and every url. So, people coming to your site will automatically get redirected to the new one. And also submit all the new urls through webmasters tool.

    well domains do not influence ranks. so your .net will not get better if you make it a .com

    The only positive thing i can think of by switching is people are more familiar with the .com

    I would 301 the .com to the .net and not move the site.

    If you want to move the whole site to the .com then do it, but that's not going to help your rankings. It could potentially hurt if you screw up the 301s. If you delete the entire site and then 301 all of the 404s to the root index of the new domain you might screw the rankings up. Ideally you would 301 every URL on the .net to the exact url on the .com. This sounds like a ton of work if the site is large, but if that's what you want to do then that's the right way to do it.
