Using an expired domain

I know that there are many strategies for using expired domains, mostly in terms of equity.

What about this scenario: there are a number of domains expiring in the next few weeks, and each of them are getting very solid organic traffic, and I'd like to keep some of these sites as is, and use the content that is currently there.

If I buy one of these domains, what happens next?

Does all of the content disappear? I'm assuming that because there is a new domain owner (me) then there has to be a new hosting service. So let's say i immediately put it on hostgator or something. What happens to all the old content? It's gone, right?

I've heard that you can use the wayback machine to see all the old content. Is there any legal issue with me using the wayback machine to copy and then repost all of the old content? Additionally, if there is a lag between when the site goes down until i host it live again, and until i can repost the content, won't the keyword rankings suffer in the meantime?

Any advice for any of these steps would be great.

Thanks.
