SEO for E-Commerce Site

I'm looking to configure SEO on my e-commerce site and need some advice on whether it would be acceptable to Google for me to copy and paste the same keyword inclusive phrase at the start of every product description on my site?

For example, if I was selling free music downloads, could I have something like this on every product page.

Digitek provides the web's highest quality free music downloads. To stay up to date on our content, subscribe to our mailing list!

Depending on how much content you have on those pages, Google will either ignore all but the 1st instance or call it duplicate content. If it calls it duplicate content, it's gonna be pissed off at you and not let you make money.

Why are you considering doing that?

Dont use the same description, you can make a little tweak and then use it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. The idea is to have a unique description for each product, but at the top of each description, a short phrase which contains the keywords, and explains what the site is all about. Say I'm selling hypnosis mp3s and targeting the phrase 'free hypnosis audios'...I'd have a description for each MP3, but at the top of the description something like, "HypnoWizz provides free hypnosis audios - to stay up to date on all our content, subscribe to our feed.".

        Hi frank1985,

Don't do it Frank, just don't do it!

You could do it that way, but please realize it provides for a poor user experience.

For both Users and SEO it would be much better to include that snippet of text after the product description. I suggest you place it below the CTA.

Search engines, like Google, use proximity, prominence, and placement as ranking factors in their search index. If you make that text the most prominent, by placing it at the top of your content, then Google will either discount it altogether, or treat all your pages as duplicate content.

Having said that, the main reason you should not do it it that it provides for a very poor user experience and will likely harm ecommerce conversions rates in a very measurable way.

It's way better to lead with a highly descriptive headline and put the boilerplate text down below the main content, or in a sidebar.

        HTH,

Agreed - do not use a boilerplate description for each product page. You might consider using a server-side dynamic keyword insertion that uses the manufacturer name, mfr part, category hierarchy, price, availability and other unique info to create a unique statement that also invites visitors to join the mailing list.

I definitely wouldn't go for that. Try making everything unique and relevant. Remember, Google loves good information and good articles. Try providing some.

Ecommerce is a bit different beast. I think what you are describing is what we would call a dynamic SEO map. Do a search on that and if it is indeed what you are talking about you can do that with the On page SEO.

If that isn't what you explained then still get a good grasp of inserting title tags etc via dynamic seo maps because it can be extremely helpful for commerce sites.

Try to avoid the duplicate stuff. As google is really very strict in this matter specially after the Panda Update

Should not matter as long as your actual product descriptions aren't the same or very close to each other. It's very typical for sites to have elements that repeat through the site.

Duplicate content is one of the things that gets hysterical reaction from WF SEO as you can see from this thread.

I've never seen this happen, nor have I heard any credible SEO practitioner make this claim.
