I recently asked a question (more of a statement actually) on a guys seo plugin page, BUT he answered as follows..

Q: Title tag is the same as H1 in a normal wordpress post isn it not?

A: Yes without a plugin to add a real page title, normal WP will use page title as H1 and title. This is bad for SEO

... that's not right is it?.. how is that bad for SEO? I have always just used the title in my wordpress posts just as they are... and i never include any other H1 tags as I always thought the title tag was fine... have I been wrong all this time?

This is not necessarily bad for SEO, to use the same text for the page browser Title and the H1.

However sometimes it is better for SEO to use one or more H1 tags (not more than a couple) that are different than the page title.

The page Title is the single most important page element for SEO relevancy and ranking and signals to Google the topic or theme of the page. Next would be the H tags.

So you might want to use different texts for Title and H1. For example, if you want to build ranking for other non-branded, long-tail, or variations of phrases:
Page Title: "ABC Widgets in San Francisco for Your Grandma | ABC Corp."

H1 tags: "Widgets in San Francisco" and "Widgets for Grandma: Best Prices."
With this approach you can potentially improve the number of keywords your page will rank on. You don't need the branded terms in the H tags because you already rank on those, and this way you have more keyword density in those important page elements. There are many other factors that will impact SEO and ranking, but I think this shows why sometimes it's useful to use different Title and H1 texts.

thanks for that, yes I can see how it works... but I was once told never to use more than one H1 tag in a single article, I never really knew why but I always stuck to that rule. (the title tag being the only H1)... I guess rules were meant to be broken, especially if they are wrong in the first place .

You're assuming all WP themes are built the same way which is obviously wrong.

I have no idea why anyone would use a plugin to change heading tag text.
