There's no point in setting a word limit out of a hat. Check out your competition for the keywords you want to rank for, and deliver better and longer content than them. You're still gonna need sum good links though :-).

No.You don't even need a single word. You can even rank a site with no words at all.

I can show you Pinterest Pins ranking on first page with just a Pic and a short description. Just an example.

You don't always need lengthy exhaustive articles to rank.

We don't always see eye to eye but I totally agree with this comment.

This forum is obsessed with articles and I have no doubt that started with EZA (ezinarticles) years ago when the fad was spamming that domain for followed backlinks, well, Google caught on & shut that junk down. Old habits are hard to break.

Viral sites like I Can Has Cheezburger? - Funny Animal Pics, Gifs and Videos - funny pictures - Cheezburger are excellent examples of this. Some of the pages rank quite well and the only relevant text is the h1/title.

It's not just these forums, but I think people completely miss the point. There's plenty of content marketers that are intentionally trying to overwhelm the user by having a massive wall of content. Many people (not me) will think "wow there's just so much information here" that they will end up sharing it or linking to it since they are too overwhelmed by the length to actually read the content.

There's obviously a big difference between perceived quality and real value. http://backlinko.com/conversion-rate-optimization is an excellent example of a post where there is so much content that it is basically a worthless post. Much of the information is conflicting, it does appear that Brian has made some improvements to that page, it was much worse before. Very simply put there's just way too much information, there's enough ideas there for about 150 split tests. So do I use a 1 step opt-in or a 2 step opt-in; if 1 is better, why is it suggested to use a 2 step? There's just extra information there to take up space.

With content length, the shoe has to fit. If it's a subject where there's a lot to discuss, then a long post makes sense. If it's a picture of a rabbit with a pancake on it's head, a 2000 word post probably doesn't fit.

Another great example where shorter content length is better is tech problems and solutions. Ok so Midori.exe is crashing, I want a solution, not a massive wall of text or endless pages of discussions about program features. (Try to find a solution via Google, I dare you, I gave up and uninstalled it.)

Yes, on average, 2,000+ word posts rank higher and get more shares.

Searchmetrics does a study each year tracking 10,000 keywords, 5 billion+ links, 20 billion+ social media signals and 100s of 1,000s of on-page signals. Every year since the study began, the average word count of the posts comprising the first page of the Google search results has gone up.

Last year it was roughly 1,300, up from about 950 in 2014, and it wouldn't be surprising to see it at 1,600 words in 2016:

Two thousand or more words not only gives you a head start for 2017, but tends to lead to more shares on nearly every major social media platform. This is based on a study of 100 million articles from BuzzSumo. Check out #1:

Better to trust data from studies involving millions of data points than SEO hearsay.

On average is the key term here, however. Not every post over 2,000 words will outrank a shorter one, but you can certainly put the odds in your favor by writing lengthier posts.

What matters most is backlinks and people are more likely to link out to a longer post than a shorter one.

You also have to be smart when trying to parse these studies.

Does this come from the fact that 2000 words is indeed a great length for content, or from the fact that many of the most popular bloggers use this long format style? If you have a few dozen briandeans and copybloggers of the world in these studies they're going to raise the averages for articles that hit the #1 SERPs. And that at least partially stems from having strong sites in the first place.

I would always aim for creating something that's compelling. However, I'd also say that 1000 words is a short piece, and it's very hard to get anything said in such a small number of words.

I see a similar problem with this interpretation. People are likely to link sites that they know are already credible on the field.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

          What's your excuse?

That means it will be 4,800 by 2026, are you sure you are interpreting that information correct?

So in 2026, when I google "snake with a hat" the #1 page will have nearly five thousand words of written content.

          Are you sure man?

No, that will never rank. You need 20,000 words on every single page.
