What is a "good quality" backlink?

I've been working on building the citations for our website (see: https://www.hidepark.co.uk/) and it's the first time I've built a citation campaign from scratch.

One thing I get hung up on a lot is people talking about acquiring good links. I try to steer away from what I think are bad links, but I can't seem to stop the citation flow/trust flow from dropping.

I'm being so harsh on backlinks that I fear I'm not acquiring enough links to help build the citation metrics.

So, what is a "bad" backlink? Am I steering clear of too many opportunities?

Citation Flow and Trust Flow really have nothing to do with link quality in Google's eyes. It's a metric created by Majestic. It's not used by Google in any way.

Some link types I would avoid:

Profile links - A few of these on sites that make sense are okay. For example, if you are building links for an attorney and create a profile on a few sites like FindLaw.com, that would make sense. Creating a profile link on a site like this for a lawyer, would not make sense.

Blog comments - You can try to justify these anyway you want, and I'm sure many others will. If you are commenting on a website with the intention of getting a link back to your site, it's spam. End of story.

Forum links - Except for a few cases, these are nothing but junk.

Article submissions - Any of the article directories out there like Ezine are nothing but total trash.

Auto-approve free directories - There are a few exceptions to this. Generally though with directories if they are not moderated and you do not have to pay to get into them, they are probably nothing but junk.

Actually, try to build text links using different types of content. Avoid spammy catalogues

I use social media backlinks, high PR blog comments(though try to make them on sites in the same niche and actually write something worthwhile), create a press Release, get as many shares as possible. If you can create your backlinks yourself!

Also if you haven't already make a FB page, Twitter account and any other social media accounts for your site including Youtube!

      Good luck mate!

EDIT - Spammy backlinks are the type that you buy in a package that promise 10,000 quality links, they will most likely be spammy and from Countries such as China...

Page rank hasn't been updated since late 2013 so if you're using that as your metric to determine which backlinks to go for, it's probably not accurate. Moz's Domain Authority is more up-to-date:

      https://moz.com/tools/seo-toolbar

Backlinks from reputable news sites are going to be very powerful for your site, but are of course harder to come by. One way I've found of building them is with Help A Reporter Out. It's a free platform that reporters from all the major publications use to gather quotes for their stories. Oftentimes they'll include a link to your site or business:

      Help A Reporter Out

What is arguably on par with news domain backlinks are related sites linking to you. So if you ran a blog on SEO and and Moz linked out to you, it might do as much for your ranking as a well-known newspaper.

If you think you have backlinks that are hurting you, you can get rid of them with the Disavow Tool:

They are all spam links and the exact sort of links that Google targets with the Penguin algorithm and manual unnatural link penalties! Care to explain why you think they are "good" links?

  • From a generic point of view the overall important characteristics of a high quality link are:

    1. Authority

    2.Relevance

    3.Uniqueness

    4.Traffic

Cheers guys. All useful information, and most if it I implement anyway. I'm more worried that I'm being too harsh. I can spend hours backlinking and only come out with one or two quality links, which seem to have little effect on our overall domain authority.

How do you determine if a page has high PR (Google has not made that info public since 2013). At best, you can determine if it had a high PR in 2013.

      That was 1.

2: Unless you get a link from the supposed high PR page, you are not getting a high PR backlink... Most pages on most sites had/have a PR of 0...

To get the benefit of PR, you need to get a link from a page that's got tons and tons of backlinks itself.

Can we stop the high PR crap?

HUD.gov used to have a PR of 5 in 2013. Might still have it. Might be 6 by now. It's got thousands of pages with PR of 0. To get high PR benefit from this site, you'd need to get a link from the homepage. Links from other pages get you links from 0 PR pages. (HUD.gov won't give you a link from your homepage, won't give you a link from one of their minor pages, either... But a link from its homepage would kick ass... Because it's a trusted site with lots of links going to the homepage.)

      3. There never was such a thing as a high PR site, only high PR pages.

So, let's stop the high PR site maddness.

A good link is any link that isn't a bad link.

A bad link is a link that Google thinks is some form of spam or manipulation tactic.

The worst "bad" links are the type that are spammed by robots all over the internet. There are programs you can buy that create thousands of blog comments with links in them, or thousands of forum profiles and posts with links in them.

In general, you should avoid this type of automated link building at all costs. There is a way to do it "right" that might still work, but unless you are very careful you can end up getting your site penalized and lose all your traffic.

Good quality backlink refers to the inbound link that is coming to your site from other site with high PR. There are many sites available from where one can get rich backlink. like bookmarking site, forums, classified ads etc.
