Things to look out for when buying SEO services?

I'm looking for some solid and reliable SEO services, at the least, that won't get my site penalized by Google. After reading Google's opinions on unnatural links, I'm starting to get paranoid.

I mean ain't most of the SEO services out there offering and building links in these ways? Have you had any experiences with SEO firms / providers that get your site actually penalized in the end for using these ways to build links?

I'm looking for long-term results, not just short-term gains, so the last thing I want is to spend money to get my site penalized after a short outburst. I checked out quite some SEO providers all they claim are:

- 1. How they can build xxx links, xxx directory submissions, xxx articles published, xxx EDU/GOV links, xxx blog comments, xxx forum profiles / posts / signatures, xxx social bookmarks, xxx guestbook entries, across a matter of 3 - 6 months.
- 2. How they can bring up rankings in a relatively short period of time, e.g. 1-3 month ---- it's great but I had my own experience when my site gets up in the rankings quickly then penalized forever.

According to Google's link scheme standard, these all fall in that kind of efforts that will be negative to SEO rankings, do they?

I used to do SEO myself and these ways actually work a few years ago. I haven't done any SEO in recent years so I'm not sure if they work now or if they actually get penalized by Google as they state.

What's your recent experience? If they don't work now or even work negatively, what should I do now in SEO?

I get offers ranging from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars per month, is more expensive the better? What should I look for in an SEO firm from now on?

Would really like some experienced pros here to share some insights. Thanks!

If they tell you they are going to do xxx number of directory submissions, articles, edu/gov links, blog comments, forum spam, etc... just run. That sounds like a really, really shitty SEO.

Then what kind of SEO is not shitty? Please can you elaborate?

Good SEO company will not only analyze your website and keywords, but also gives recommendation to get your on site optimization in place. Backlinks should be on the later part.

Any new ideas? Warrior Forum used to get lots of useful and sophisticated replies with any thread. I have a monthly budget to spend for my site but I don't know how to choose companies and was really afraid it could do more harm than good!

If I were you I would look for SEO companies, look up what clients they serve, and get in touch with those clients directly for a review. Most will not answer you but some will and that's the only way to get some real feedback on what companies do a great job and what don't.
I have never hired an SEO agency myself, had no need to.
But if I needed one I would go about it this way.
Because if you don't know a lot about any topic you will not be in the position to judge if a self-named expert is really an expert or a scam.

That's a great tip. I'll definitely try it out thanks!

If you know the basics of SEO already, you can ask the SEO service provider for some example sites that they helped to boost and then do some backlink checking of the site they boosted has high quality backlinks. You can also test them on some basic on page SEO do's and dont's.

Aside from on page SEO changes, if you want long term ranking, you ultimately need high quality permanent backlinks.

Be wary of SEO providers that build you lots of backlinks that are low quality. Also beware of SEO providers that give you temporary high quality backlinks but then take those away after some time (leading your site's ranking to drop).

Most SEOs aren't worth it. They tend to do some work up front and then automate and/or do nothing there on out until your site gets slapped or you finally stop paying them.

My recommendation would be to hire a PR person, but one with a solid understanding of SEO.

      That's a band-aid.

Would you hire a plumber to put a new roof on your house If most roofers were crappy? I wouldn't, I'd do the research & find an SEO I thought I could trust then start them out with small task to get a feel for the quality. If all is good slowly work up to larger more expensive projects.

SEO itself is a never ending job, competition comes & goes, Google has updates, etc...

Yangyang, just do what Nerdwallet does and hire a company to build citations on media sites.

Then buy a bunch of domains and 301 them into your domain.

Apparently a site suddenly having 100,000 citations in the media is "natural." Why the media would be discussing this site in the first place is beyond my comprehension.

I've never seen so much SEO on a site that's still indexed. Oh it's probably because Google ventures owns a part of the company.

True, the entire site is nothing more than affiliate offers on a massive scale.

They rank for all these keywords without the hyphens:
      • hxxps://www.nerdwallet.com/balance-transfer-credit-cards
      • hxxps://www.nerdwallet.com/cash-rewards-credit-cards
      • hxxps://www.nerdwallet.com/rewards-credit-cards
      • hxxps://www.nerdwallet.com/travel-miles-credit-cards
      • hxxps://www.nerdwallet.com/business-credit-cards
      • hxxps://www.nerdwallet.com/low-interest-credit-cards

Right. And if do a few guest blog posts, targeting the keyword "Top Affordable Credit Repair Services Compared" they'll slap the sh17 out of my site.

I'll get a penalty for unnatural links, thin content, thin affiliate, link schemes, and hacked site all at the same time. They'll go through my search console account and deindex all of my sites, including my site about collecting coins which has no links and isn't trying to make money.
