What's the new hotness in SEO?

Hi guys,

I run a local IT company and have a client who wants me to manage their websites and provide SEO and IM. It's been about 6 years since I have done any of this on my own but back then I was pretty heavy into it and was an active member here. I just know things change with time. Honestly I am going to hire someone to do this stuff anyway, I am way too busy with my business, but I would like to know what to look for when talking to SEO guys because I know they are a dime a dozen and a lot of them just sit back and collect your money and produce nothing.

So basically, what in general is working for SEO these days?

The new hotness in SEO in 2016 is the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Project. It will become one of the ranking factors preatty soon I guess. Google Webmaster Tools has an AMP section already. Several people I know have started to implement it.

That would depend on the actual linking pages, but I doubt it. The biggest change while you were away is probably Google's spam controls and devaluing a lot of link sources. The ones you can generate yourself are typically the poorest ones.
      Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

Died long before they stopped selling the packets.

That person doesn't even know what that means.

Look into it them but calling it a ranking factor (ROFL) should indicate to you that this person is clueless.

Unless you are doing SEO for a site with 100k backlinks in a niche where sites with that many backlinks is the norm, anytime you see the term "Ranking Factors" run. Optimizing for ranking factors will do little to no good on sites that are not that competitive. Here's why: first of all, it's unknown which factors are actually the most important, but it's known that they individually do very little. Say a 1% boost or less. So if you optimize a site with 100k backlinks for a ranking factor, that's like getting 1,000 more links. That's probably easier then actually getting 1,000 more links and getting those links might not be possible. I hope this helps.

I agree with the above point of Accelerated Mobile Pages(AMP). Recently Paul Shapiro wrote a detailed post on SearchEngineLand. I found it very helpful for understanding AMP project and how can we implement it.

Another hotness in SEO industry is the importance of Indirect ranking influencers. It is ignored by majority experts but Rand considers it as one of the factors affecting organic Google ranking. I also believe it.
