Backlinks relation with keywords

How backlinks relate with keywords ?

I mean let's assume I have a domain where I have lots of backlinks to let's say
http://domain.com/blog

but I want to rank
http://domain.com/offer

I mean sometimes it might be easier to get backlinks to some other URL than to the ones I'm really after.

I.e. if I create a cool content not related with my offer ( I can put some links to my destination offer there of course) and get many backlinks will that do any good for ranking on other keywords as well, or is it waste of time ?

    You have to get the backlinks related to the keywords you want to rank and to the page you want to rank if you want the best results.
    You could also link internally to pass some link juice, that will help your page rank better.

    If all your backlinks point to domain.com/blog , you should link that page to domain.com/offer in order to pass link juice.

    Anchor text diversity. Use a variation of text within your links.

    For eg...

    If you want to rank for blue widgets, you might use -

    blue widgets
    widgets that are blue
    blue and red widgets
    blue widgets by acme widgets
    http://www.acme.com/bluewidgets/
    click here
    view more
    acme widgets
    (and image links)

    You should be doing likewise using internal links (interlinking internally within your own site)
