Where do I find a great SEO guy other than from WF?

I've been working months looking for someone proficient in SEO to help my business' website SEO.

I have very little grasp of SEO itself but I do know that you should never try to hire from Odesk. You will be bombarded with Indians who seem to have sort of monopoly on SEO. And they call themselves "Experts" but after trying out a few of them for a months they have left a sour taste in my mouth.

So where do I look for SEO experts? Legit experts, I know I can look for them in this forum but I'm curious what other website I can use to find someone versed in SEO.

    Ccarryon,

This forum is a great place to ask question and receive help about SEO. You do have to filter out the advice about what is beneficial and what is "Hear say".

Also, when looking for an SEO company you might find people that work from home and work on smaller types of campaigns and other larger companies that work with Medium - Large size businesses working with 8k per month budgets etc.

If you provide more detail in to what type of business you are and what you are looking for I can help

Correction this forum USED TO BE a good place to learn SEO. however it has now been over run by the very same kind of "SEOs" that offer their "services" on Odesk and fiverr.

It's really said that you have bad experience with seo companies, but In my point you have to discuss everything before hiring anyone for your project. Doesnt matter if you hire from Upwork or WF.

Been in this industry for years and know of no place but forums. Not that there are not directories but anyone can get on them so you run into an even worse problem. At least on forums you can read what the SEO says and figure out if they know what they are talking about. Heres a checklist

If they tell you just write great content and you will rank automatically Run the other way

IF they tell you they do White Hat SEO by placing links manually - run the other way (manual or automatic makes little difference - if they are placing bad links manually its not white hat)

IF they tell you they place links on high Pagerank pages - run the other way. (pagerank has not bee updated publicly in over two years and google just this week turned off Pagerank data forever - If a SEO is not keeping track of changes he/she is no good)

Sorry to say but if they do not speak good english -RUN THE OTHER WAY. If you want to rank in Google and Bing then you have to know English because if you don't you won't understand the changes and policies).

IF they mention article directories, profile links, blog comments as their key way of ranking - run the other way

If they mention using fiverr gigs RUN THE OTHER WAY

Finally if you want white hat SEO for your business ask them how they get natural links. I'd say 95% of the SEOs here have absolutely no idea how to get webmasters to link to your site. Their SEO is ENTIRELY based on placing backlinks themselves on sites they can (who have free signup) or buying links or PBNs (which can have their place). If you do affiliate pages, adsense sites then you can probably get away with blackhat stuff because if your site gets penalized you can put up another domain and start again. If you have a business where you can't change your name easily or where you were building a brand you can't do that and a SEO should be able to at least get you some natural backlinks to avoid destroying your business.
