Brand domains or EMD domains?

Hi friends,

I want to start a new website and purchase a domain name, when doing some searching I came to know that google now prefer brand domains (e.g. amazon.com) over exact match domains.

If this is the case the search engines will no more rank your website based on your domain keywords and you will need to do a lot more work for ranking your website.

Can anyone tell me more clearly what is the best practice before buying a domain name to rank my website in google?

I still like EMD because unless you can build a brand how are people supposed to understand what your site is about?

But you can do a hybrid such as Petersphotographyshop.com

EMD still gives you ranking power for the exact keyword. But if you want to rank for more than one keyword, then it'd be better to choose a name that will be easier to promote and get links to rather than a spammy looking EMD domain that nobody will want to link to.

Please show me where you read/learned Google now prefers brand domains... if it's from a new or updated source.

Years ago simply filling out your meta-tags info was good enough to get some fair to good rankings in the serps. Slightly after that EMD's had an edge over common domain names. In fact I believe it holds true today depending on the competitiveness of the industry as G gave me a front page listing because my EMD matched the keyword phrase.(low compete industry)

Also, in my opinion, EMD's are easier to remember when it comes to the needs of the consumer...

      Raysroofingandrepair.com
      or
      RoofingRepair.com

Yes, highly unlikely to acquire such an EMD, but with search, adding an adjective before or after the main phrase helps.

This is true, but only technically speaking. The value of an EMD has dropped so much that I would not bother for that reason alone, but as others have pointed out it might not be a bad idea to have your business idea in your domain name.

For example, I've recently set up a site for a wall painting company. The domain was like this: wallpaintingjohnsmith.tld Well, actually the domain name is the same as the legal name of the company in this particular case.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

A project varies with purpose. I use EMD for sniper sites and cool domain names for sites I use paid ad's for and manage social networks with.

If you're gonna burn a site, use an EMD
    - if you're gonna do some long term SEO and rank for hard keywords and make the effort to play with social networks. Choose a bad ass name. It all boils down to your social play anyways.

    Omer,
My personal experience is little different than previous comments. I prefer EMD instead of domain name when you are going to start business in particular region or area and your business is about local services like moving, photography, house-cleaning or legal services as well. For example if you are going to start a website which provides price comparison service then keyword "compare" gives you better value in domain name.

As one of the expert said here, for multiple keywords and global business, you should peak brand name and try to promote brand, I know it will take time to build trust in your audience but definetely it will work. I think, for any shopping website or ecommerce kind of things you should go with brand name.

I am doing one website already and it is on my name, www.omerfarooq.com, before I was posting blogs related to finance and business topics which I was teaching locally in my country but I was not doing any traffic thing on that.

Now that I've started Internet marketing business and I was able to build a list of subscribers in internet marketing niche I want to pull traffic from my blog to my list. But the blog topics on my list are not related to internet marketing.

I want to make a separate blog only related to internet marketing niche. For this I have two options; I can either purchase a new domain name and build a blog website for internet marketing or I can make a new blog on www.omerfarooq.com solely for internet marketing purposes.

Someone please tell me what will suit me the best for building an internet marketing website, make a internet marketing blog on my existing website (which is a brand domain) or purchase a new domain name that will match the keywords with internet marketing?
