Content is king - right?

If you maintain a high quality blog with a post every 3 days or so about a topic that people are very much interested in and you don't do any social media, build backlinks or any off site SEO but only onsite SEO + quality consistent content how long will it take for decent traffic to pick up?

If heard there have been blogs that have done this successfully. of course we are talking long term here.

Any thoughts on this?

Organic traffic generally begins to build up after six months.

Well, it depends on a series of factors. For example, besides content, Search engines also analyze the state of your site, how long you have been around, the level of trust you're receiving from your readers, and so on.

For example, if there are 2 sites starting at the same date, on the same niche, they won't be at the same place after a while as attracting traffic depends on a series of factors. However, you will be starting to see results in about 6 months. Emphasis on "starting" as things will build up from there and, if you keep up the good work, you should be satisfied. If you earn your readers' trust and sympathy, getting more traffic every month should not be a problem.

I don't know. I know after I personally build a site that I believe people will like, I do social media marketing and people there will tell me if they also like the site or if that I'm an idiot and it sucks. This won't help you with Google directly, but it generates traffic and really helps you figure certain things out. Once real people like your site, probably after you've made some improvements, it doesn't really seem difficult to do SEO since the site is "likeable" and people don't really mind linking to cool things.

It's really not all that hard to do SEO when people want to link to you.

I built a bunch of new sites recently and I'm extremely impressed with the one site I've done minor SSM on. People seem to enjoy the site, nobody has called me a scum bag or anything. The site isn't trying to make any money yet but it's starting to get a few followers and likes. I think Google sent it 2 visitors that aren't me. So do you really think it's a good idea to wait 6 months before trying to market your site? I don't. You're going to want to do SSM sooner or later, why wait? Build a respectable site, do some SSM, you don't need big results here. A handful of people can be extremely helpful and it's really not hard to get a few people on FB to visit your site and tell you what they think about it.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.

Earl is not king. There are many ranks in between an earl and a king.

If you post backlinks on forums, related blogs, social media, youtube, etc., etc., for exactly six months, you will rise from earl to duke. Continue this for another six months and you will be promoted to baron. After another six months you will be promoted to prince. Six months after that you will become king.

You can do something similar with ecclesiastic sites. That is, move from priest up to bishop to archbishop to cardinal and then finally you will be the pope for your keywords.

Of course if you're not prepared to put in any work, you can always marry into a royal family, however there are risks involved with that as well. Google is becoming more egalitarian these days, so you might want to marry the daughter (or son - not that there's anything wrong with that) of a president, or another type of democratically elected official.

      You're welcome.

Always pisses me off when people skip over... like a duke is nothing! Would I have so many marquis' daughters foisted on me day in and day out if it were otherwise? Can't imagine how my cousin the grand duke's days are, let alone my cousin the archduke's!

I've done this before on a few keywords that total in about 5,000 searches a month, loads of competition, but I managed to get it #1 for multiple keywords with content alone. Well, actually I had several social media networks linked which grew over time. But no backlinks built from me otherwise, not a single one. Not even organic backlinks, I checked a few days ago with a link checker, no site links to my blog, but still, it is ranked #1 on page one.

That's about it, I had a few YouTube videos for starting traffic, blogged about 3 times a month, and I also incentivized my traffic to share the blog posts. Dunno the weight of that but many posts have hundreds of shares on sites like Facebook, Google + and Pinterest.

I don't really remember exactly but I think it took me about a year to get the #1 rank. I was on the first page of Google in about 2 or 3 months after starting the blog.

Now, I'm sure you can do better if you blogged more recently, and if you can get your hands on a few good backlinks.

My success with the site basically came without me ever planning for it, I only made the blog for so the YouTube traffic had somewhere to land, but over time I started working more on it and well.. Yeah content can be really king.

    Could be never.

    Too many factors to consider.

I'm certain there are some very lovely trees in the forest. But until someone can point out to me where they are I will never know they exist. I will go only so far down a trail before turning back around to find a closer tree to admire.

Yeah content is king and its not enough to see traffic. you have to build backlinks to see traffic coming to your site. and do some promotions on several social media sites to attract backlinks.

when you own a website. it need much work. you don't have to sit and expect traffic.

A lot of people preach this whole "content is king" nonsense without any real understanding of what it actually means.

Content on its own is meaningless. Especially if your content marketing strategy (or lack of) is built purely upon guesswork.

I see a lot of site owners publishing fluffy content in an effort to satisfy some kind of superstitious schedule.

"I need to publish a blog post every 3 days"

    Why?

I also see a lot of site owners implementing the "publish and pray" method.

They publish, they pray, and they wait.

And they wait and wait and wait.

Nothing happens so they repeat the process.

    Here's the thing.

When it comes to content you've got to have a strategy.

Im going to break this down into a few quick points, because I'm busy and well, don't have time to write a 10,000 word response here in this thread.

    1. Reverse engineer your competitors content. Why? Because you should be focusing your efforts on what is already working in your space. How? Use Buzzsumo.

    2. Take content they've published (that has acquired links, shares and engagement) and improve upon it. Make it 10 times better.

    3. Promote the hell out of it. Syndicate it across social media, within forums, groups, your email list and anywhere else people will find it valuable (don't f*cking spam)

    4. Repurpose that content into other formats. For eg, take a blog post, convert it into a podcast, a video, an infographic, a slide deck. Then promote the hell out of that too.

    5. Track and measure everything. None of this means anything unless you are tracking it. Use Google Analytics.

Build and refine a system that works.
Publish brilliant content (good content sucks)
    Build an audience
    Be different

Stop "guessing" and start working with purpose.

Content is king, but without backlinks how do you expect anyone to find you? Surely, you have a strategy so that people can find your awesome content, right? Google is not going to magically place you on the first page unless you have some authority. You need good backlinks for authority.
