Hi guys,

How easy is it for a country-specific domain extension such as .fr or .de - or one even more obscure to rank well in another country such as the USA or UK?

Is it even possible? If so, what would be the best way to go about it?

country level TLDs are mainly suited for targeting the audience of a particular country. A .fr domain may rank well in France but not in USA under normal circumstances. If you want to target several countries, go for generic TLDs.

Usually, when you buy a target specific domain you post content in that language. For example, a .fr domain should contain content in French. Both Google and your readers would expect to see that. You can create an English version of your site and register it as a sub-domain, but the main version should be according to the domain.
If you want to target people globally go with a general domain.
