Creating links to sites that link to mine?

Lately I've had some success in resource page outreach.

Basically you use a search term in Google to find resource pages in your niche, then contact the site and ask them to add your site to their resources page.

So far I've had a decent success rate, usually between 5-10% of the sites that I contact add my site to their page. So far these have all been good, dofollow links on legit websites.

I remember reading years back about how some blackhat SEO's would build legit links like this, then super charge them by spamming lots of automated links at those pages on other sites that linked to the SEO's site.

Basically it creates more link juice flowing to those sites, and theoretically some of that juice gets passed on to the SEO's site. Because the sites are legit and already established, it's less likely that they'll be penalized by the automated spam links.

My question is: Has anyone done this? And what results have you achieved? Is there a noticeable increase in ranking if you spam a bunch of automated links and/or social bookmarks at other sites' pages that have linked to your own site?

Has anyone got measurable results with this method?
