Google SERP yoyo, what's going on?

I have a few sites that rank on page 1 for my topic/keywords, but then they will drop back to page 15, and then back to 1 a couple days or weeks later, then back again to 12-18... I can't seem to maintain steady SERP position - I'm building backlinks but steadily, not in a bunch or link spamming or anything - can anyone explain?

This is called the Google Dance. Due to freshly crawled pages quite often by Google, your SERP moves each time they get indexed. Because they are fresh, sometimes they moved ahead of yours temporarily but if you do lots of link building, you should maintain your SERP after a few days. If you don't moved back to the original position, it just means these new pages have more rank than yours and you need to add more backlinks

Those are just algorithm updates. When Google updates their algorithm the search results change. It's just one of those things that comes with the territory

Just keep doing what you know you need to be doing (providing quality content and building links) and you'll continue to rise.

If you're seeing this a lot lately, fear not. A lot of us are seeing major tectonic shifts, then a return to "normalcy." I suspect part of this bigger-than-normal bouncing around is Google working on their 'Caffeine' update. Keep building backlinks and adding content. It'll all work itself out.
