I went to your site, clicked on

    Sailor Moon, Understood - Noitartst

Scrolled to the bottom, didn't read any of it.

I would suggest the first thing you do is focus on the user experience on your site.

Like, what's going on here: Services - Noitartst

Stop everything you are doing, focus on making the user experience much better. When you're done with that, fix the keywords you are targeting in your h1 and title tags.

What's the keyword here "National Capitals Indicate Where the Tension Is"

What do I type into Google to get there?

Google -> SEO Techniques -> Note: 21 Actionable SEO Techniques You Can Use Right Now

If you decide to read Brain Dean's posts, I suggest you cut and paste them into microsoft word, delete all of the buzzwords and all of the other BS, then read it. Absolutely delete the comments...

Then use another text editor to take notes. Then blacklist his site in your firewall so you don't accidentally get sucked in.

    Scalable.

    White hat.

I'll believe that, but the question is, what do I do about that? And, how do I measure progress?

Start by being descriptive with the text in your title tags.

Here's one of your page titles on Google SERPs: Services - Noitartst

Services? Are you installing septic tanks, an aeronautical contractor for the space industry or pimping on the Vegas strip?

You're likely right; someone I'm working with says to focus on just my categories, which I'm currently trying to do. Talking about National Capitals is an odd thing, I'll admit, and shows I've got a lot to learn.

I have located a website about whitehat SEO that is basically the same thing as Brain Dean, but there isn't annoying buzz words every 3 sentences.

Robbie Richards | Actionable Online Marketing Strategies

Same thing with the content pillars though. So make sure your scroll wheel on your mouse is set to fast or learn how to use the page up & page down keyboard shortcuts.

Notice how he knows how to use Excel... Usually, when I see somebody claiming to be an "SEO" I don't believe them until I see them using a spreadsheet. There's a direct correlation between rankings and Excel knowledge, in my opinion, and from my observations. As far as whitehat. If they put the data into something like revolution and do data modeling, well then you need to be worried.

Didn't mean to, or know any value in the configuration, but you're right.

That's basically over my head; I didn't know just what content pillars are, until I looked it up, just now. So--a blog can be a content pillar, now?

As is, thank you for the Robbie Richards blog: I will examine it.

Pillar content just means the content is long and looks visually like a pillar on a web page.

Example: Should I use four 500 word articles or a 2000 word pillar?

        Answer:

Since Google ranks pages, not websites, (with nothing else considered... just talking about text here) the pillar will do better on the main keyword. It will do really well if it's broken up into subsections with proper usage of markup (h2, h3, h4 tags http://www.hobo-web.co.uk/headers/) and has lots of media like pictures or videos, and proper usage of other elements like font styling, tables of information, links to files, and so on.

The conversation here gets interesting if were talking about silo structure and a boilerplate (like a customized category page that links to the sub content) pages with proper internal linking (the sub content should be cross linked.) I think the oldschoolers will say that's better, but it's really a personal experience thing here. The extra page would add more content, so depending on how this is all done it's really hard to say without looking at it case by case.

If what I'm saying seems complex, go read everything you can on Rob's site that I linked earlier.

Edit: Bit more on headers, the site I linked gave 2 examples, the problem with the second one arises when there's more then 5 sections, which with a pillar should happen every time. Usually a section is a paragraph or two. So the correct usage would look like:

        <h1>title</h1>
        ..<h2>intro</h2>
        ..<h2>main idea one</h2>
......<h3>a smaller idea #1 that is related to idea one</h3>
......<h3>a smaller idea #2 that is related to idea one</h3>
......<h3>a smaller idea #3 that is related to idea one</h3>
        ..<h2>main idea two</h2>
......<h3>a smaller idea #1 that is related to idea two</h3>
............<h4>a smaller idea #1 that is related to idea two and it's sub idea #1</h4>
............<h4>a smaller idea #2 that is related to idea two and it's sub idea #1</h4>
......<h3>a smaller idea #2 that is related to idea two</h3>
............<h4>a smaller idea #1 that is related to idea two and it's sub idea #2</h4>
............<h4>a smaller idea #2 that is related to idea two and it's sub idea #2</h4>
        ..<h2>main idea three</h2>
......<h3>a smaller idea #1 that is related to idea three</h3>
......<h3>a smaller idea #2 that is related to idea three</h3>

Note: the headings are just the "Titles" of the content for that section.

If that makes no sense to you, Google "n tree" or "tree view" and stare at the pictures and remember, there should only be ONE h1 tag.

Oh...so the whole site is ranked, and nothing else? I wish I'd known that. So--where does SEO-ing individual pages come in if, the site itself is ranked, and not the pages?

This is a revolution, in my thinking, really.

Sooo...how do I rank a site on Google, as opposed to ranking videos on YouTube?

I've begun to understand now, why sites need to be specific.

Who said that? Google ranks individual pages, but sites are generally cross linked by their navigation, this spreads the authority around.

If the category contain other post that needs ranking what do you do.
      I think that's a bad advice.
You should focus on the main keywords whether page, post or category.

You need to be patient and check Google regularly for any improvements in ranking for a keyword you are targeting. Suppose you are focusing on "Free Online Ads Sites", then after on-page SEOing for that keyword in your website, you can check if your website is visible on Google in few weeks.

You need to do a website audit for your site.
Here's a checklist that might help you get started, https://moz.com/blog/technical-site-audit-for-2015
Make sure to set up a plan and a timeline for it, and most especially a goal.
You need to do onpage optimization first before anything else.
Make sure to also analyze your target market.

Hi, I notice you have a Wordpress blog and also you are using Yoast SEO plugin. The Yoast plugin is very powerful plugin and but the downside is it can get very overwhelming at time for newbies. I have many clients over the years where I have installed this plugin for them and for them not to use the full 100% potential this plugin has to offer.

For starters you should add a title, a page description within this plugin as it places within the header of site as <meta/> data for search engines to read when indexing your site. As this tells the search engine such as Google what the site is about and then will place this within search results.

Yes, these days sites need to look good, but I have seen sites look terrible but rank quite high due to the fact of using correct meta data and good high original content.

In conclusion, there are many methods but this can take a very long time to learn. It is best to hire someone to do this for you I think so you can concentrate on the look of the site itself.

      Okay, read a tutorial, .

What concerns me, though, is how can I measure that individual page's ranking on Google? I need to figure out how if my efforts are effective. My youtube videos, i know if it works; is it the same process, here?

Here some things you may want to do:
    1. Change the font color in your sidebar - your text is unreadable expecially when the background is an image
    2. Add keyword rich content regularly
    3. Summarize your content in the front page and add sliders, call to action button, may be a video or somethng you want to share.
    4. Add seo plugins to your website

Your site design is responsive and that's a good point, It has a fast loading time.

LSI keywords....there is a blackhat way to do this, but I would do strickly white hat
with two LSI keywords in title, and sprinkled in post.

This works for us, and paid traffic too. Actually paid traffic is better than any SEO you will ever do.

    My site, is here.

How is it improved? One thing I've noticed, on the left sidebar of the homepage, is that the long titles of the homepage aren't indented, showing where one ends, and one begins other than that, the changes I ordered on Fiverr:

Well, on the home page we need to either remove the header image or move it so that the text is not bleeding into it.

Also, a line that separates the sidebar from my main content's needed, on the homepage.*

    We need onpage optimization, too.

The header should be moved further up and placed below the Navigation, or else placed above the navigational bar.

On the About Us page, the image fire coming down covers much of the screen real estate. If the visitor doesn't notice the scroll bars on the right, he might click away please take care of it.

I'm not trying to sell something on the site, at present

Also, my Google analytics account needs hooked up to my site; beyond that, my "uncategorized" category needs deleting; beyond that, the posts under the “musings” category probably need not show on the site proper, and just be listed a drafts, or something like that.

Someone clicking here on my site has come to be informed about news commentary utilizing my own unique spin;* insight will be the benefit*my visitors are going to get.

Beyond that, I see this as a list building site; kindly place the opt-in top, and on every page/post.*

Also, the posts under the musings category probably need to go, or at least not be seen on the site, only in admin.

I want a sidebar on my blog posts.

    I want an opt-in atop every page/post.*

I'd like a logo for my title, "Noitartst." Not necessary, but nice.

For my blog entries, let's have the blog post titles underlined so the visitors will know to click on it; the titles on blog posts themselves, though, need not be underlined; they aren't linked to anything, and thus to underline them is pointless.

My header should be moved further up and below the Navigation, or else above the navigational bar.

The primary and secondary buttons need to be deleted, if they just aren't doing nothing.
Change the font color in your sidebar--my text is barely readable.
Also, please add seo plugins to your website, if my current ones don't pass muster.

'Fraid I didn't get everything, but I got something, and Fiverr offered me a refund, which is good.

Let me tell you the fact about a website and its ranking. It doesn't bother what website you have, you have to follow the Google algorithms and you have to correct the ON Page of it. Unless and until you rectify the problems of your On Page you can't land on the Google's first page.

After that you can perform OFF Page on it that too in a quality websites whose PR is above 4 or 5. Quality content and quality sites could help you to boost the rank of your website in Google search engine quickly. Even you can post the link of your blog in different high quality sites to generate huge traffic on it.

You have a long way to go as far as optimizing your site for SEO.

You pretty much don't have internal links and the few you do have are targeting irrelevant text/keywords (anchor-text) that traffic will never search for on Google Search.

The text in that list is anchor-text from internal links on your own site pointing to your article (The Trouble With Intellectual Women). Nobody is doing a Google search for those keywords.

Optimize your anchor-text for keywords that people will actually search for on Google Search.

That same article and probably all the others on your site don't have any internal links in the content pointing to relevant pages on the same domain. Use followed internal links with keyword anchor-text to link to relevant internal pages.

Followed links is the core of ranking webpages on Google SERPs.
