Ideally you have to target specific keywords in specific niche. If you have too many keywords in very different specific niche, that'd be super difficult.

But theoretically I'd try to optimize SEO on page on EACH those keywords.

If you're using WP, first you'll have to categorize each news into different category, would it be sport, crime, beauty, etc. Then try to get more specific posts for each category above and put links to other posts.

  • Hi,

I agree with the categories. You need to organize the topics you are covering in your news website. From these categories/topics, build up a set of keywords and use them as a basis for your SEO. Also use long tails and choose low competition, high search volume KWs.

    Goodluck!

    Hi chinmayc,

If by SEO, you mean get onto the first page, this is essentially what you'd need to do:

Do a search for the keywords you’d like to come up on the first page of the search results for. So let’s say we wanted to come up on the first page for “how to make money.” Look at the top three organic results you see there not including the ad links at the top. Read those three articles and ask yourself how you could improve on them. What are they missing and how many words are there in the post?

Copy the URLs and head over to seoreviewtools.com. Paste the URL in there, enter the captcha and click perform check. What you need to do is write a post that’s at least 2,500 words long and 500 – 1000 words longer than the longest post you see in the top three results.

Put the keyword or keywords in your post about 1% of the time. So the words "how to make money" should appear in a 3,000 word post about 30 times. Remember to include subheadings throughout the post and put one image in there for every 150 or so words of content. Include links to outside sources in your post as well as links to other posts on your site.

Once you’re done putting the article together, go to moz.com/researchtools/ose and enter the URL of the article(s) you’re trying to top and look at who’s linking to it. The list will be under the heading called Inbound Links.

They’re only going to give you a partial list but you can sign up for a free trial and just cancel it before the 30 days is up.

You also want to pay particular attention to the Domain Authority number you see on the right. The higher that number is, the more valuable a link from that site will be for your post.

Once you have a list of sites linking to those articles, go to emailhunter.co and enter the URL of the sites you found on MOZ and hit enter. That’s going to bring up a list of the email addresses of the people who run those sites.

Send them an email saying something along the lines of hey, love your site and the articles. I was reading a great post you linked to in your article on blah blah blah. I just put together a similar post that’s even more thorough and up-to-date and wanted to pass it along and see what you thought. Then include the link to your article, but don’t ask them to link to it just yet. Keep it casual.

If they write you back and like it, then you can ask in the reply email. Just do that to the contact person at as many of the sites you found on MOZ as you can. Not all of them are going to respond, not all of them will link to you but if you getting, say, 10% of them to link out to you, you’re going to see a big boost in your post’s and site's) rankings.

Also, while you’re waiting to hear back from these people, start posting your link in facebook groups, Twitter and all of the forums and message boards you know related to your niche.

What you should also do is share it in some Google+ communities. Some of those groups have 10s of 1,000s of members and many of them will link to your article without even asking. Just be sure to introduce yourself and vote up other people’s posts a couple weeks beforehand.

It’s not easy to write 2,000+ word posts and hustle for links but that’s what it usually takes for a first position result.

    Best,
    Matt

      Nonsense.

Counting words has nothing to do with ranking pages.

Getting a large following will be a huge help. For news sites, social followings could be a huge % of your traffic. You could also get links in the process of promoting your articles. Post them to reddit, all your social pages, social bookmarks, post in niche relevant forums.

Let me know if you need help with link building

  • Basically, you can divide Newspaper SEO into a few categories:

    1. Template - URL optimization

Make sure the article title is in the <title> tag too, and include the category. <title> - <category> - <newspaper name> works best in my experience.
Move all javascript and CSS to external files. Better for your regular visitors too as the browser will cache those and not request them on each hit, saving their time, and your bandwidth.
Get rid of as much unrelated content as you can, and nofollow all links in the unrelated content that you can't get rid of.
Make sure the article title is an h1, and that the CMS used automatically uses h2's and h3's for subheadings.
Move the content up as high in the template as you can, and the navigation down.

    And with the URL's:
Include those keywords, for instance, the post title and the category. Seriously, it helps too much.
Important: leave some numbers in the URL's. Google news requires that "The URL for each article must contain a unique number consisting of at least three digits." Stupid. I know.

    2. Content optimization
When you're working on big newspaper sites, the first thing you stop worrying about are keywords. If you write unique, keyword rich articles within a well optimized template, these articles will rank incredibly well.

    3. Improving internal link structure
There are a few methods, and I'd recommend using more than one:

    Tagging :
If you can get them to tag each new article going into their database with 3-5 tags, and show them that the tag pages you create with these get actual traffic, you can probably persuade them to tag at least a part of their archives as well.

    Files:
Another method is to make files about people, companies and specific subjects.

    Categorization:
You should look at the categorization with your SEO perspective.

    4. Google News optimization
You should get your content indexed as soon as you can. To do that, you should create a Google News XML sitemap, and continuously update it.

Since its a vast topic to cover, be specific and short in the categories you choose and introduce on your website. The more specific and unique your category and the the title of your each news related article, it will automatically fetch you a good SEO. Other than submitting it to different news related directories and blogs, also have a special on-page SEO technique, where the links are connected within to get a proper juice.
