I recently posted a question about keyword rich domains and today I am onto .edu or .com domains.

Its been reported that google likes .edu backlinks so I thought what does google prefer in terms of domains. Would it prefer to a educational website with a .edu domain or a .com domain and how would this effect search engine rankings?

If you plan to sell anything use .com, if the site is for educational purposes, then use the .edu

With proper on-page SEO and enough quality links and good content, you will rank either way. Pick the domain that explains your site best.

The question is academic (no pun intended)

You cannot register a .edu domain unless you are an offically recognized academic institution.

That has only been reported by idiots and scam artists.

Besides... you cannot just register a .edu domain.

If you are have a genuine educational institution or organisation helping students to get admissions, then you can try to apply for the .edu domain. However buying an .edu domain is not so easy, have to submit lot of official documents and then they will verify it and decide if you or your organisation is suitable to get an edu domain.

I guess if you dont have any such requirements, then better to go with .com domain, since its an educational site, you will have good exposure from google. just make sure you dont link-up or get backlinks from unnatural sources.

For educational purposes it's best to use .edu rather than .com.

    .edu is more distinct.
